Overview

AutoCAD is a professional CAD package for precise 2D drafting and 3D modeling, built for designers and teams who need to work with DWG drawings across devices. Its breadth of specialist tools and collaboration options make it a strong fit for varied design workflows, but the subscription cost and single-user seat make it a substantial commitment.

Seven industry toolsets cover architecture, mechanical, MEP, electrical, plant, mapping, and raster design. That range is useful for specialists who can put those tools to work; occasional drafters may find a paid, full-featured subscription more than they need.

Compare it with other options in CAD software, 2D CAD software, electrical design software, and architecture software.

Key features

2D and 3D drafting: Precise drafting, design, and modeling in both dimensions suit projects that move between plans and models. Native DWG and DXF support, PDF underlays, parametric constraints, and batch printing add practical drawing and output capabilities.
Industry toolsets: The seven specialist toolsets span architecture, mechanical, MEP, electrical, plant, mapping, and raster design. This breadth can reduce the need to switch tools across disciplines, while users focused on a narrower task may not benefit from the full package.
Collaboration and data: Shared DWG files, parallel work, and multi-user markups support coordinated drawing workflows. Standalone subscriptions also include Forma Data Management Essentials.
AI assistance: Markup assistance, block replacement suggestions, and contextual productivity tips offer help within design work, without replacing the underlying drafting and modeling tools.
Support and versions: Subscriptions include 24x7 online support options and resources, plus the current version and three previous versions. That combination is useful for users who need support access or compatibility with earlier releases.

Pricing

AutoCAD has no free plan. A 15-day free trial gives prospective users a short window to assess whether the toolset justifies an ongoing subscription. Eligible students and educators can get one-year renewable access while they remain eligible.

Monthly subscription: 260.00 USD per month, billed monthly, for AutoCAD. This is the flexible option for short-term work, but it costs more per month than the annual commitment.
Annual subscription: 2095.00 USD per year, billed annually, for one user. It lowers the effective monthly cost compared with monthly billing, in exchange for paying for a year up front.
Three-year subscription: 6285.00 USD per year, billed annually, on a three-year term for one user. It commits the buyer for longer without reducing the stated annual price against the annual plan.

Annual and multi-year subscriptions have a 30-day return period; monthly subscriptions have a 15-day return period. Each subscription is assigned to one named user, who can install it on up to three devices but use it on only one device at a time. That makes the license workable across a user's own devices, not a way to share one seat among colleagues.

Platforms

AutoCAD supports Windows and macOS, with web access and mobile apps for iOS, Android, and Windows. Every subscription includes web and mobile access, extending a desktop subscription to other devices. Offline mode is supported, an advantage when connectivity is unavailable; the one-device-at-a-time rule still governs use.

Who it's for

AutoCAD is best suited to professionals and organizations doing precise 2D and 3D design across disciplines, especially when DWG compatibility, specialist toolsets, and coordinated drawing work matter. It is a harder fit for casual users, teams seeking a shared seat, or buyers unwilling to commit to paid software; there is no free plan, and the trial lasts 15 days.

Pros and cons

Pro: Seven discipline-specific toolsets cover a broad range of design work within one product.
Pro: Web and mobile access come with every subscription, while offline mode and installation on up to three devices support an individual user's varied work settings.
Pro: DWG collaboration, parallel work, multi-user markups, and included Forma Data Management Essentials support coordinated drawing workflows.
Con: The subscription is costly for occasional use, with no free plan and a 15-day trial.
Con: One named user and one active device per subscription limit seat sharing, even though installation is allowed on three devices.
Con: The three-year plan requires a long commitment but carries the same stated annual price as the annual subscription.

Alternatives

For a free option with a different licensing tradeoff, Onshape has a free plan limited to non-commercial use with publicly accessible documents. Tinkercad is a free web and iOS option for 3D design, electronics simulation, block-based coding, and classrooms.

GstarCAD is another paid CAD option with a free trial and broad platform support, while Creo offers paid CAD access, including a floating license for shared concurrent organizational use. Rhino 3D and SOLIDWORKS are other alternatives to compare.

Autodesk Inventor is a paid, Windows-only alternative with a free trial and a Flex option for 24-hour access using tokens. CATIA is another paid option for web and Windows.

Verdict

Choose AutoCAD if your work depends on precise 2D and 3D drafting, DWG workflows, and discipline-specific tools, with web and mobile access included. Its broad capabilities and collaboration features are compelling for sustained professional use; look elsewhere if you need a free plan, shared licensing, or a lower-cost tool for occasional drawing work.
