Overview

Hive brings schema management, performance insights, and gateway deployment together, with a hosted Console or a self-hosted installation. The on-premises version is free and open source, giving teams deployment control without a Console subscription, though operating it becomes their responsibility. The gateway’s multiple deployment formats and roles make Hive useful beyond registry work alone.

Federation support covers Apollo Federation v1 and v2; Hive’s product page reports a 100% Federation audit score. That will matter to teams using federation, while teams seeking only a client library or language-specific server may find Hive broader than they need.

Key features

Schema management and collaboration

Hive Console tracks schema changes, checks schemas, catches composition errors, and provides a schema explorer. Consumer and provider verification, operation testing, mock servers, project scaffolding, custom templates, schema-to-code generation, a CLI, and IDE plugins round out the workflow. Unlimited seats, projects, organizations, schema pushes, and checks on Hobby and Pro remove common team and validation caps; the operation quota, not collaboration volume, is the more important constraint.

Gateway and observability

Hive Gateway can act as a federation gateway, subgraph, or proxy, and ships as a Docker image, binary, or JavaScript package. JWT authentication, role-based access control, persisted documents, rate limiting, and CORS and CSRF protections cover several practical gateway concerns. Usage and performance insights include metrics for spotting slow operations, helping teams investigate API behavior rather than relying on schema checks alone.

Integrations or reference implementations cover Apollo Gateway, Apollo Router, Apollo Server, GraphQL Yoga, GraphQL Ruby, GQLGen, and OpenTelemetry. The CLI works with GitHub Actions and repositories, and GitHub Discussions provide a community channel. The broad integration range is useful across GraphQL stacks, though Hive’s code-generation support does not include client code generation.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it includes
Hobby	0.00 USD per free	1M operations per month, 7-day usage data retention, unlimited seats, projects, organizations, schema pushes, and checks; GitHub issues and chat support. Free forever.
Pro	20.00 USD per month	1M operations per month included, then $10 per million operations; 90-day retention, unlimited seats, projects, organizations, schema pushes, and checks; GitHub issues and chat support. 30-day free trial.
Enterprise	Custom pricing	Custom operation limit, one year or more retention, volume discounts, dedicated Slack support, onboarding, 24/7 support, and a tailored SLA.

Hobby is intended for personal or small projects: its free-forever price and unlimited collaboration are generous, but a 1M monthly operation allowance and seven-day retention make it a limited fit for teams that need longer-term analysis. Pro suits scaling APIs and teams that value 90 days of data, but the additional $10 per million operations means the $20 monthly starting point is not the whole cost. Hive advises considering Enterprise above 300 million operations per month; its custom limits, longer retention, and support terms target organizations needing a negotiated operating plan. SOC 2 Type II compliance is relevant to teams with compliance requirements.

Platforms

Hive supports API, web, and self-hosted use. The gateway runs as a Docker image, binary, or JavaScript package; the Console can be hosted or self-hosted. Supported languages include TypeScript, Flow, Java, C#, Dart, Reason, Swift, and Kotlin, while server languages are JavaScript and TypeScript. GraphQL schemas use GraphQL SDL format.

Who it's for

Hive fits teams that need schema governance, federation, gateway controls, and operation-level visibility in a shared GraphQL workflow. Hobby is a reasonable starting point for personal and small projects, while Pro is aimed at APIs and teams scaling beyond that stage. Self-hosting is a strong option for teams prioritizing deployment control. It is less suitable for buyers who need predictable hosted costs at high traffic or a dedicated client code generator.

Pros and cons

Pro: Schema checks, composition safeguards, and observability sit alongside a gateway, reducing the need to separate those GraphQL operations.
Pro: Both free and paid tiers allow unlimited seats and schema activity, so team growth does not itself trigger a plan-seat ceiling.
Pro: A free, open-source on-premises Console and several gateway packaging choices give deployment flexibility.
Con: Hosted usage is metered by operations; Pro adds $10 per million beyond its included monthly quota, so traffic growth affects spend.
Con: Hobby retains usage data for only seven days, which limits its usefulness for longer-term performance review.
Con: Client code generation is not included, so teams needing that capability must use another tool.

Alternatives

Microcks is a free, open-source, community-driven CNCF Incubating project for buyers who want an alternative with broad platform support, including desktop operating systems and extensions.

Pact is free open-source tooling for teams choosing a contract-testing-focused alternative rather than Hive’s GraphQL management and gateway combination.

Pact Broker is worth considering when contract testing is the priority: its Starter plan offers unlimited users, two integrations, and bi-directional contract testing, alongside a free self-hosted Pact Broker option.

Specmatic is a better fit for teams centered on OpenAPI, WSDL, or MCP contracts and seeking contract testing, API resilience testing, and service virtualization.

Confluent Cloud is an alternative for teams seeking a managed, autoscaling Kafka service with more than 80 fully managed connectors.

Karapace suits teams wanting a free, self-hosted drop-in replacement that can also be used with a managed provider.

Karate is a free MIT-licensed choice for teams needing REST, GraphQL, or SOAP API testing alongside browser and desktop UI automation and Gatling performance testing.

oasdiff is worth comparing for teams that want an Apache 2.0 open-source engine with a CLI and GitHub Action.

For broader comparisons, see Contract Testing Tools, Code Generators, GraphQL Tools, and API Design Tools.

Verdict

Choose GraphQL Hive if your team wants schema governance, gateway deployment, federation support, and API observability together, especially when self-hosting or unlimited seats and schema activity matter. Look elsewhere if you need client code generation or cannot accommodate operation-based hosted charges as usage grows.
