Overview

Arm Keil MDK is an embedded development toolchain for software targeting Arm Cortex-M and Ethos-U processors. It suits teams building firmware across IDE, command-line, or continuous-integration workflows; its strongest case is the combination of Arm-focused tools and independently addable software packs, while μVision’s Windows-only limit and the commercial subscription prices call for a careful setup choice.

MDK v6 brings together Keil Studio extensions for Visual Studio Code, Keil μVision, Arm Compiler for Embedded, and Arm Fixed Virtual Platform models. Its target scope also covers Armv8-M, SecurCore and legacy Arm microcontrollers, and Fast Models. This breadth makes it relevant from board-level firmware work through virtual-model development, but its focus is specifically on Arm targets rather than general-purpose application development.

Key features

Flexible workflows and software packs

Developers can work in an IDE or from the command line, and software packs can be added independently of the toolchain. Packs supply device and board support, software components, middleware, code templates, and example projects. That separation is useful when a project needs particular target resources without making every component part of the core installation.

The Keil Studio VS Code pack supports CMSIS workflows and includes an integrated debugger and extensions for creating, building, and testing embedded applications. Integrated debugging and flashing, RTOS support, and hardware probe support strengthen the fit for firmware teams working with connected hardware. μVision is another IDE option, but it runs only on Windows hosts, so it is not a cross-platform answer for teams standardizing on that environment.

RTOS, middleware, and safety

MDK v6 feature listings include CMSIS-FreeRTOS, Keil RTX5, MDK-Middleware, IoT clients, and support for CMSIS-DAP, ULink, and third-party debug adapters. The MDK-Middleware Network component uses Arm Mbed TLS to secure TCP/IP communication. These integrations give embedded teams a route to common runtime and networking building blocks; the Professional edition adds Arm Compiler for Embedded FuSa, a FuSa C library, and a functional safety run-time system for projects that need those safety-oriented components.

Arm says it maintains administrative, physical, and technical safeguards to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of non-public information. Support includes cases, a community forum, documentation, and learning videos.

Pricing

Keil MDK uses a freemium model, with a free Community plan for non-commercial use. Community includes Keil Studio, Keil μVision, and Cortex-M device support, making it a sensible starting point for non-commercial work, but it does not cover commercial use.

Essential and Professional are also offered at one license per user, with custom pricing. For commercial users who want published monthly pricing, Keil MDK v6 Essential costs 99.00 USD per month, billed $99.00/ month per license. It includes commercial use, all Cortex-M cores, μVision, VS Code extensions, and API access. It is the more focused paid option for commercial Cortex-M development without the additions of the higher tier.

Keil MDK v6 Professional costs 199.00 USD per month, billed $199.00/ month per license. It includes Essential, Arm Virtual Hardware, Arm Compiler for Embedded FuSa, and legacy tools including Arm Compiler 5. The higher price is justified for users who need virtual hardware, functional-safety compiler components, or legacy tool support; otherwise Essential costs less while retaining the stated commercial Cortex-M and IDE access.

Platforms

MDK supports Linux, macOS, and Windows desktop platforms, and its broader platform reach includes API, extension, and web access. The distinction between the toolchain’s cross-platform workflows and μVision matters: developers on Linux or macOS can use Keil Studio’s VS Code workflow, but μVision itself is limited to Windows hosts.

Who it's for

Keil MDK is best suited to embedded developers and teams building for Arm microcontrollers or Ethos-U processors who value a choice of IDE or command-line workflow, integrated debugging and flashing, RTOS support, and add-on packs for target-specific resources. It is particularly compelling when a project benefits from MDK’s compiler, debugger, middleware, and safety-oriented additions in one Arm-focused toolchain.

It is a weaker fit for commercial users seeking a low-cost entry point, since the published commercial v6 plans start at 99.00 USD per month per license, or for teams that require μVision on non-Windows hosts. Non-commercial users can start with Community, but its stated scope is Cortex-M device support rather than the commercial plans’ all-Cortex-M coverage.

Pros and cons

Pros

Several ways to build: IDE, command-line, and continuous-integration workflows suit teams with different development and automation practices.
Target resources are modular: independently addable packs provide device and board support, middleware, templates, and examples without tying those resources to the toolchain.
Useful embedded integrations: RTOS support, debugging and flashing, and CMSIS-DAP, ULink, and third-party adapter support address common firmware workflows.
Professional adds safety and legacy options: FuSa components, Arm Virtual Hardware, and Arm Compiler 5 support specific needs not covered by Essential.

Cons

μVision is Windows-only: teams using macOS or Linux cannot use that IDE on their host and need another workflow.
Commercial pricing is per license and monthly: the published v6 Essential and Professional prices are 99.00 USD and 199.00 USD per month per license, respectively.
Community is non-commercial and narrower: it is limited to Cortex-M device support, so it is not the free route for commercial use or the full paid-plan scope.

Alternatives

C2000Ware is a free option for C2000 microcontrollers; choose it when that target family is the priority rather than Keil’s Arm Cortex-M and Ethos-U focus. Its installer requires export approval.

CS+ is a free IDE for development and production; it may suit readers who want a free IDE and can work within evaluation compiler limits where an evaluation compiler is used.

IAR Embedded Workbench offers a 14-day non-commercial evaluation, so it is worth considering for a time-limited evaluation rather than Keil’s non-commercial Community route; the evaluation excludes runtime library source, C-STAT, and MISRA C support.

PlatformIO IDE has a free Community plan with forum and documentation access, making it an alternative for readers whose priority is a free community-supported IDE workflow.

Arduino IDE is a free, open-source IDE with autocompletion, code navigation, and live debugging, and is an alternative for readers who prefer that open-source IDE offering.

AURIX Development Studio is a free option for AURIX development on Windows 11, with no time or code-size limitations.

e² studio is free with no paid version; choose it if a free IDE is the priority and separate compiler packages with their own license terms or evaluation limits are acceptable.

ESP-IDF Extension for VS Code is a free VS Code extension for ESP-IDF, a focused alternative for readers seeking that extension-based workflow.

Verdict

Choose Keil MDK if your work targets Arm microcontrollers or Ethos-U and you want an Arm-centered toolchain that can span IDE, command-line, and CI workflows, with packs and Professional additions available for specialized needs. Look elsewhere if μVision must run on macOS or Linux, or if the monthly per-license commercial cost does not fit your project.
