Overview

Voicebox combines voice cloning and speech generation with a timeline editor, audio effects, dictation, and integrations for compatible agents. It can clone from a sample as short as three seconds, provided by upload, microphone recording, or system audio capture. The maker lists 23 languages and a dubbing workflow, making the app relevant to projects such as game dialogue, audiobooks, podcast intros, accessibility readouts, and scripted agent output.

It belongs among Voice Cloning Software, AI Voice Cloning Software, Text-to-Speech Software, and Voice Changer Software. The breadth is appealing, but the defined offering is the local desktop app, not a finished cloud or mobile service.

Key features

Voice generation and editing

Seven listed text-to-speech engines cover cloning, preset voices, and delivery controls. That gives creators options for generating distinct speech rather than relying on a single voice path. The Stories editor arranges multiple voices and tracks, trims clips, and mixes conversations on a timeline, which is useful for building dialogue or other multi-part narration.

Pitch shift, reverb, delay, compression, and other effects, alongside saved presets and live preview, let users shape generated audio inside the studio. This is a more complete creative workflow than generation alone, though users seeking only quick text-to-speech may not need an editor and effects suite.

Dictation and integrations

A global shortcut records speech and sends its transcript to the focused text field or clipboard. Local Whisper models support 99 languages, a distinct strength for users who need dictation alongside voice production. MCP-aware agents such as Claude Code, Cursor, and Cline can speak through Voicebox using a cloned voice; a POST /speak endpoint is also described for other clients.

The local REST API exposes speech generation, voice profiles, model status, generation history, and health checks. That makes Voicebox relevant to developers who want to connect local voice output to scripts or tools, rather than just work in a desktop editor.

Privacy and future cloud service

The desktop app works offline without an account. Its privacy policy says recordings, profiles, transcripts, generations, and settings are not sent to the maker, a meaningful advantage for users who want their voice work to remain local. The announced cloud backup is designed to encrypt library data on users’ devices, leaving servers with ciphertext they cannot decrypt. Cloud sync and mobile use, however, are still forthcoming.

Pricing

Local is 0.00 USD per free, billed Free forever. It includes the full app, requires no account, and allows unlimited local generations and captures; it is open source. This is the practical choice for people comfortable working on a desktop without cloud sync. There is no free trial, but the free plan is not presented as a time-limited evaluation.

Cloud is 12.00 USD per year, billed $12/year at a launch price, and is marked coming soon. Its planned package includes 25 GB encrypted storage, up to 5 devices, 30-day version history, and end-to-end encrypted backup and sync. It may suit users who need a shared library across devices, but its pricing and limits are not final.

Studio is 48.00 USD per year, billed $48/year as a placeholder with pricing TBD, and is also coming soon. The planned offer includes 250 GB encrypted storage, unlimited devices, one-year version history, and priority support. Its larger storage and device allowance target heavier or multi-device use, but it is not a settled price or available plan to rely on today.

Platforms

Downloads are listed for macOS on Apple Silicon and Intel, Windows 64-bit, and Linux, which requires building from source. Docker deployment is documented. The platform categories also include Android, iOS, API, and self-hosted, but mobile and cloud functionality is marked coming soon; Voicebox is therefore best treated as a desktop app for now.

Who it's for

Voicebox is a strong fit for desktop creators who want to clone voices from short samples, edit multi-voice stories, and keep audio work local. Developers may value its REST API and agent integrations, while people who want dictation alongside speech production get a separate local workflow in the same product. It is less suitable for anyone who needs mobile access, finished cloud sync, or a settled cloud subscription today.

Pros and cons

Pros: Unlimited local generations and captures on the free plan remove a quota from regular offline use.
Pros: Voice cloning from three seconds of audio and several capture methods lower the threshold for creating a voice profile.
Pros: Timeline editing, effects, dictation, and agent output cover creative and developer workflows beyond basic speech generation.
Pros: Offline operation without an account, with the stated local privacy protections, suits users who do not want their voice material sent to the maker.
Cons: Linux requires building from source, adding setup work compared with the listed macOS and Windows downloads.
Cons: Cloud backup, sync, and mobile use remain forthcoming, so users needing those workflows cannot count on them yet.
Cons: Cloud and Studio prices and limits are not final, making them poor bases for a firm budget decision.

Alternatives

ModelTalker is a paid option with a free plan and a listed Personal voice one-time service fee of 100.00 USD per month; consider it if that voice-construction service and its Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows coverage better fit your needs.

CereProc has a paid cloud option at 12.99 GBP per month for one million credits; choose it if a character-based cloud plan better matches your generation needs. Fish Audio is a freemium alternative with a free tier capped at 8,000 monthly credits, up to seven minutes of generation, and up to 500 characters per generation; it may suit readers who prefer a web-accessible service and can work within those caps.

Kits AI is another freemium alternative. VoiceStudio is a free alternative. CosyVoice is free, open-source software with self-managed deployment. Fish Speech is a free alternative with a capped tier. GPT-SoVITS is a free alternative.

Verdict

Voicebox is best for creators and developers who want voice cloning, editing, dictation, and agent output in a privacy-minded local desktop app. Its free Local plan is the clearest reason to choose it: it combines a broad toolkit with unlimited local generations and captures. Look elsewhere if mobile access or dependable cloud sync is essential, since those parts of the offer are still forthcoming.
