Overview

Apple Podcasts is a listening service for finding and following audio and video shows, with a free catalog that spans millions of programs. It is especially well suited to listeners who use Apple devices or want to move between devices without losing their place. Its broad access and offline playback are compelling; paid extras are creator-priced, so subscriptions require more scrutiny than the free catalog.

Key features

Listening and keeping up

Listeners can download any episode for offline playback, and new episodes from followed shows can download automatically. That makes the service a practical fit for commutes or unreliable connections, while cross-device sync supports moving between supported devices. Private feeds are supported, too.

Video and transcripts

Video podcast support adds a visual option alongside audio. Transcripts can be read and searched, with chapters and jumps to points in an episode helping listeners navigate long programs or follow along in text. Transcript support is limited to select languages, so it is not a dependable text companion for every show or listener.

Subscriptions and creators

Creators can offer paid shows, episodes, and channels, with benefits that may include ad-free listening, bonus material, unreleased episodes, or other subscriber-only content. The benefit depends on the creator's offer rather than a single standard package. Select subscriptions from App Store apps, Apple News+, and Apple Music can also be connected.

Creators receive 70% of subscription revenue initially and 85% after a year of paid service, excluding applicable taxes; other podcast revenue, including advertising, goes to the creator. Apple also provides creator tools for production, analytics, audience connections, and paid subscriptions.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it includes
Free shows	0.00 USD per free	Millions of shows at no charge
Premium subscriptions	Custom pricing	Creator-priced monthly or annual subscriptions to premium shows, episodes, or channels

The free catalog is the strongest reason to start here, and no usage cap is stated for free listening. Premium pricing varies by creator, so listeners should compare the price with the specific extras on offer. Subscriptions can be shared with up to five people through Family Sharing. Cancel at least one day before renewal to avoid another charge; access continues until the date shown on screen after cancellation.

Platforms

Apple Podcasts is available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV 4K, and Apple Vision Pro, as well as on the web at podcasts.apple.com and on Windows via iTunes. It also supports CarPlay, HomePod, smart speakers, and compatible car systems; CarPlay is available in more than 800 car models. The range is a clear advantage for households or drivers using different devices, though Windows access is through iTunes rather than a listed native Windows app.

Who it's for

Apple Podcasts suits listeners who want a large free catalog, offline access, transcripts, and continuity across Apple devices. It is also a reasonable choice for listeners willing to pay individual creators for specific extras. Those who want a single predictable premium price should weigh that creator-by-creator pricing before committing.

Pros and cons

Pros: Millions of free shows and downloads for any episode make it useful both for discovery and offline listening.
Pros: Sync, automatic downloads, and broad Apple-device support reduce friction for listeners who use more than one device.
Pros: Searchable transcripts with chapter and point navigation provide a useful way to revisit or follow episodes, where supported languages are available.
Cons: Premium prices and benefits vary by creator, making subscription costs less predictable than a fixed service plan.
Cons: Transcript language coverage is selective, limiting the feature's usefulness for some shows.

Alternatives

Choose Pocket Casts if you want podcast listening and discovery with web and desktop access on a free plan, or a published Plus price of 3.99 USD per month for its paid tier. Overcast is another freemium option for listeners on iOS or macOS; its paid plan hides visual podcast advertisements. If an open-source, free Android player is the priority, AntennaPod offers RSS subscriptions without in-app advertising. For a free self-hosted option with broad platform support, consider PinePods. Browse more podcast apps to compare listening options, or see podcast analytics software and podcast monetization platforms for creator-focused tools.

Verdict

Apple Podcasts is the right choice for listeners who value a deep free catalog, downloads, and continuity across Apple devices, with transcripts and video as useful additions. Look elsewhere if you need one predictable subscription price or broader transcript language coverage; premium offerings are set by individual creators, and transcript support is selective.
