Overview

Amazon WorkSpaces is a managed cloud service for delivering virtual desktops and streamed applications to remote and hybrid users. It suits organizations that want persistent desktops, application streaming or a controlled browser session across a range of devices. Its breadth is useful, but costs, billing and lifecycle dates vary by offering, so choosing the right WorkSpaces option matters.

WorkSpaces Personal retains each user’s desktop, installed applications, files and settings between sign-ins. WorkSpaces applications instead builds application images and streams sessions, including on GPU instances. A secure browser option streams encrypted browser-session pixels from AWS. These are distinct ways to deliver a work environment, not interchangeable price tiers.

Key features

Persistent desktops and metered use

Personal offers AlwaysOn monthly subscriptions and AutoStop hourly metering with a monthly base fee. AlwaysOn is easier to budget for steady use; AutoStop can fit desktops used intermittently, but its base fee and hourly charges mean the monthly total depends on usage. Bundles include persistent SSD-based user storage sized to the bundle, with automatic backups. Amazon S3 or Amazon FSx can retain selected user files and settings between sessions.

Applications, identity and management

WorkSpaces applications supports image building and streaming on general-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized and GPU instance families. That range accommodates different workload needs, though provisioned instance-hour charges sit on top of the application user fee. For Microsoft software, customers can bring Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise licenses to WorkSpaces DaaS or buy Microsoft Office bundles from AWS.

DaaS supports desktops joined to AD and non-AD domains, brokering through AWS IAM Identity Center with providers such as Entra ID, and endpoint management through Intune. WorkSpaces also supports VDI management software from Citrix, Dizzion, Leostream, Omnissa and Workspot. This makes it relevant to organizations integrating desktop delivery with existing identity or management arrangements.

Browser controls and security

The secure browser offers controls for file transfers, printing, copy and paste, domain allowlists and blocklists. WorkSpaces requires TLS 1.2 and recommends TLS 1.3, with cipher suites supporting perfect forward secrecy. AWS states a financially backed service-level agreement based on monthly uptime percentage and lists 99.9%.

Pricing

The starting price is $25/mo, but WorkSpaces costs depend on the offering, region, bundle and usage. The examples below show why that starting figure should not be treated as a universal desktop rate.

WorkSpaces applications — Windows single-session user fee: 4.19 USD per month, billed $4.19 per user per month, plus provisioned instance-hour charges. This covers Windows Server streaming sessions; instance price varies by type, size and operating system. The user fee is a clear baseline, but not the complete cost.
WorkSpaces secure browser — standard.regular (US East/Northern Virginia): 7.00 USD per month, billed $7 per monthly active user, with up to 200 streaming hours per monthly active user. Each additional streaming hour costs $0.035, and regional pricing varies. This fits controlled browser access better than a persistent desktop, but heavy use adds charges.
WorkSpaces Personal AutoStop — Ubuntu Linux Power example (US West/Oregon): 7.25 USD per month, billed $7.25 per month + $0.66 per hour, with an 80 GB root volume and 10 GB user volume. It can suit intermittent Linux desktop use; hourly charges make frequent use less predictable.
WorkSpaces Personal AlwaysOn — Windows Standard example (US West/Oregon): 44.00 USD per month, billed $44 per machine per month, with a 175 GB root volume and 100 GB user volume. Its fixed monthly charge suits steady use, but costs more than the AutoStop example before that option’s hourly charges are counted.

The Free Tier lasts up to three months and includes either two Standard AutoStop desktops with 40 combined monthly hours, or five Performance AutoStop Ubuntu desktops with 100 combined monthly hours. Those shared hour limits make it useful for a limited evaluation, not ongoing use at broader scale.

Platforms

WorkSpaces clients support Windows, macOS, Linux, iPad, Android, Chromebook and supported web browsers. That range helps users reach desktops from different devices. AWS says support for PCoIP-based WorkSpaces Personal ends on October 31, 2027, a date organizations using that protocol should include in their plans. WorkSpaces Pools stopped accepting new customers on July 31, 2026; existing customers can continue using it until December 31, 2027.

Who it's for

WorkSpaces is best suited to organizations that need centrally delivered desktops or applications across remote and hybrid teams, particularly those that value persistent storage, identity and endpoint-management integration, or GPU-backed streaming options. It is less compelling for an individual seeking one simple, fixed-cost cloud PC: the Personal examples vary by billing model and bundle, while application streaming adds instance-hour charges.

Pros and cons

Pro: Personal desktops retain applications, files and settings, with persistent SSD-based storage and automatic backups, which supports continuity between sessions.
Pro: Application streaming spans several instance families, including GPU, giving organizations options for different workloads.
Pro: Identity, Intune and third-party VDI management support can fit into established organizational setups.
Con: The $25/mo starting price does not describe the cost of every configuration; some options add hourly or provisioned-instance charges.
Con: The Free Tier has combined hour caps and lasts no more than three months, so it is only a short, bounded evaluation.
Con: Pools is closed to new customers, and PCoIP-based Personal support has a stated end date, limiting the appeal of those paths for new or long-term deployments.

Alternatives

For a persistent desktop with CPU or GPU workload configurations, consider Dizzion Cloud PC; its Core or Complete tiers use custom pricing, available by contacting Dizzion. Workspot Cloud PCs is another enterprise service with configurable desktop resources and use-based payment, with custom pricing and a demo offered on its product page.

Ace Cloud Hosting Desktop as a Service may fit teams seeking a quoted 100-user Windows Server 2022 Enterprise plan: it costs 352.19 USD per month per user and has a free trial, but no free plan. For smaller specified desktop bundles, Infosaic Cloud Virtual Desktop offers a Light plan at 11.95 USD per month with 3 GB RAM, 4 virtual cores, an 80 GB system drive and a 10 GB data drive.

Shadow PC offers fixed monthly Neo Lite and Neo plans with monthly hour and session-length limits. V2 Cloud offers Basic Users from 35.00 USD per month for front-desk, data-entry, call-center and administrative workloads, with a free trial. Vagon Cloud Computer instead charges by the hour, including a Sand option at 0.25 USD per month billed $0.25/hour, charged by the minute.

MacinCloud is another paid cloud-computing option. Browse Cloud PC Services, Desktop as a Service Software or Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Software to compare the broader categories.

Verdict

Choose Amazon WorkSpaces if your organization needs persistent cloud desktops or managed application streaming, and will benefit from its storage, identity and management integrations. Its main advantage is the range of delivery and resource options; its main drawback is that pricing is configuration- and usage-dependent, while some offerings have material availability or support deadlines. For a straightforward cloud PC with a simpler quoted monthly cost, compare alternatives before committing.
