Overview

Cloudflare serves content from 348 edge locations, spanning data centers in more than 335 cities. Setup works by switching DNS, without changing URLs, which makes it a practical front door for an existing site. Images, CSS, and JavaScript are cacheable by default, reducing repeated origin requests; bandwidth costs are bundled rather than billed as a separate bandwidth line item.

Static delivery is the straightforward part. Dynamic HTML is not cached by default, so teams seeking to cache it must create Cache Rules and account for each plan’s rule allowance. Cloudflare also supports caching anonymous API GET responses, image optimization, origin shield, video delivery, connection pooling, real-time logs, and automatic failover. These capabilities make it more than a static asset cache, but do not remove the need to configure caching deliberately.

Key features

Instant purging, API-driven controls, and granular Cache Rules help operators adjust what is cached and clear content when it changes. Rule caps are 10 on Free, 25 on Pro, 50 on Business, and 300 on Enterprise. Purge requests for hostname, tag, prefix, and purge-everything are capped at 5 per minute on Free, 5 per second on Pro, 10 per second on Business, and 50 per second on Enterprise. Free is adequate for modest experimentation, but frequent purges or many distinct caching policies make the paid tiers more suitable.

Unmetered DDoS protection, Web Application Firewall, and Universal SSL are included across the listed Network and CDN plans. Pro adds PCI DSS 4.0 compliance; Business adds a 100% uptime SLA, and Contract includes a 100% uptime SLA and network prioritization. Single sign-on and role-based account control support team administration. Workers adds serverless code at the edge in JavaScript, Rust, C, and C++.

For automation, Cloudflare provides a Terraform provider for its REST API and official Go, TypeScript, and Python SDKs. It recommends API tokens for authenticated access because API keys have security limitations. Its stated certifications include ISO 27001, ISO 27018, and ISO 27701.

Pricing

Cloudflare uses a freemium model. Free costs 0.00 USD per free, billed forever, and targets personal or hobby projects; it includes CDN, unmetered DDoS protection, and Universal SSL. Its 10 Cache Rules and 5-per-minute purge cap are meaningful constraints for active sites, and the plan does not include the WAF or PCI DSS 4.0 compliance specifically included with Pro.

Pro costs 20.00 USD per month, billed $20/mo billed annually or $25/mo billed monthly, and targets professional websites. It includes CDN and WAF, PCI DSS 4.0 compliance, 25 Cache Rules, and a 5-per-second purge limit. That is a reasonable step up for a professional site needing more cache control, though it has no stated uptime SLA.

Business costs 200.00 USD per month, billed $200/mo billed annually or $250/mo billed monthly, for small businesses operating online. It includes CDN, WAF, a 100% uptime SLA, 50 Cache Rules, and a 10-per-second purge limit. Contract has custom pricing, is billed annually, and is aimed at mission-critical applications; its stated additions include a 100% uptime SLA and network prioritization, with 300 Cache Rules and a 50-per-second purge limit. Enterprise customers receive 24/7/365 enterprise support.

Starting is free without a credit card. Cloudflare also describes monthly billing and discounts for annual upfront commitments; the plan prices make the monthly-versus-annual difference clear for Pro and Business.

Platforms

Cloudflare CDN supports web and API use, with cloud deployment and remote isolation. Its edge compute option is Workers serverless functions. The listed database support includes PostgreSQL 9.0–17.x, MySQL 5.7–8.x, and MariaDB; the stated maximum is 100 connections.

Who it's for

Cloudflare is a strong fit for site owners who want static asset acceleration, bundled bandwidth costs, and DDoS protection, WAF, and SSL alongside their CDN. Developers can use API caching, cache controls, Terraform, and official SDKs, while teams with more demanding availability needs can consider Business or Contract. It is less suitable for users expecting dynamic HTML to be cached automatically or who need high purge rates and many rules on the free tier.

Pros and cons

Pro: DNS-based reverse-proxy setup avoids URL changes, and static assets are cacheable by default.
Pro: Unmetered DDoS protection, WAF, and Universal SSL accompany CDN plans, with bundled bandwidth costs.
Pro: Purging, Cache Rules, API controls, and developer tooling give operators useful ways to automate delivery.
Con: Dynamic HTML requires Cache Rules, making configuration a prerequisite for that caching use case.
Con: Free allows only 10 Cache Rules and 5 purge requests per minute; frequent changes can push teams toward paid plans.
Con: The jump from Pro to Business is substantial, so the 100% uptime SLA and higher limits matter most to businesses that need them.

Alternatives

CDN Software is the broader category for comparing delivery tools. Consider Amazon CloudFront if its free distribution allowance of 1 million requests and 100GB transfer, plus 5 WAF rules and no overage charges, better fits a capped free deployment. Uploadcare has a free tier with 1,000 operations per month, 5 GB traffic, and 1 GB storage, making it an option to compare when those usage caps suit the project.

Gcore CDN offers a free PAYG plan with 1 TB monthly traffic and 10,000 monthly image optimizations. ImageKit is another freemium CDN alternative. Azion Content Delivery offers a free Hobby plan with 10 workloads and 1 TB monthly transfer for personal projects and experimentation. CacheFly has a free developer account with 100 GB and one domain, while its Adoption plan costs 299.00 USD per month.

Alibaba Cloud CDN offers pay-by-transfer or peak-bandwidth billing and prepaid resource plans. Akamai CDN is a paid option with custom configuration and contact-sales pricing.

Verdict

Cloudflare CDN is a strong choice for site owners and developers who want a global reverse proxy with default static caching, flexible cache controls, and security protections included. The free plan is a sensible starting point, while Pro and Business expand rules and purge capacity for professional and small-business workloads. Look elsewhere if you need dynamic HTML cached without configuration, or if Cloudflare’s plan limits and the cost of Business do not fit your traffic and operational needs.
