Overview

Editsub is a browser-based subtitle editor for people who need to revise existing captions or create them from audio and video. It is most compelling for occasional projects that benefit from timing tools, translation and shared editing; credit costs and a small subtitle-upload cap make it less suited to sustained, high-volume work.

It supports SRT, VTT, SBV, SUB, ASS and SSA files, and exports SRT and VTT. That covers common exchange formats alongside several other subtitle formats, though the upload limit is 10 MB. For a video-to-subtitle job, the maximum media file size is much larger at 3072 MB.

Key features

Editing and timing

Frame-accurate timing, batch shifting, waveform synchronization and real-time preview give editors both precise cue-level control and ways to correct timing across a track. The AI co-pilot flags reading-speed, timing, overlap, gap, line-length and transcription issues, and can fix or rewrite cues. That can help with routine cleanup, but editors who need exact wording or timing should review the results rather than treat automated fixes as final.

Transcription and translation

Editsub can transcribe local audio or video files up to 10 minutes without an account or charge. Longer transcription and subtitle translation use credits; its AI translation supports more than 100 languages. This makes the free no-login route useful for short jobs, while frequent or lengthy work depends on paid credits.

Video-to-subtitle accepts MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, AAC, FLAC, OPUS, WEBM, MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, M4V and WMV. The 3072 MB media limit accommodates substantially larger source files than the 10 MB subtitle-file cap, so the two workflows have meaningfully different file constraints.

Sharing and privacy

Multiple users can work on the same project simultaneously through a shared project link, a useful option for collaborative subtitle work. Without an account, subtitle files processed in the browser session are not stored on Editsub's servers. Account files are stored securely and accessible only to the user. Editsub says transmissions are encrypted and that it does not share personal information or subtitle content with third parties.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and allows 10 subtitle files. It is a sensible starting point for occasional editing, while the 10-minute no-login transcription allowance offers a way to try short captioning jobs. The free plan does not remove the credit requirement for longer transcription or translation.

Pro costs 48.00 USD per year, billed at $48 per year, and includes 1,500 credits per month—approximately 13 hours of transcription. It suits regular users who need a recurring monthly allowance; the annual billing is a commitment, and the stated transcription equivalent helps set expectations for that quota.

For one-off credit purchases, the Starter pack is 5.00 USD per once for 1,000 credits and the Standard pack is 20.00 USD per once for 5,000 credits; credits never expire. These are better aligned with occasional paid jobs than a recurring allowance. Separate Starter credit pack and Standard credit pack entries cost 5.00 USD per month for 1,000 credits and 20.00 USD per month for 5,000 credits, respectively, and are described as one-time packs. That distinction matters when choosing: the one-time packs explicitly say credits never expire, while the monthly entries do not state an expiry term. The general paid-from price is $4/user/mo (annual).

Platforms

Editsub is web-based, with Linux, macOS and Windows also listed as supported platforms. Its browser workflow avoids limiting the product to a single desktop operating system.

Who it's for

Editsub is a good fit for independent creators, translators and small teams who edit subtitle files, need accurate timing controls, or occasionally turn media into captions. The combination of shared projects and broad media-format support is useful when work moves between collaborators or source types. It is a weaker fit for users routinely handling subtitle files above 10 MB or relying on transcription and translation at scale, since those workflows face file and credit limits.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad subtitle and media format support lets users work with varied source files and export in SRT or VTT.
Pros: Frame-accurate timing, waveform synchronization and batch shifting support both detailed edits and track-wide corrections.
Pros: Short local files can be transcribed free without an account, and one-time credit packs never expire.
Pros: Simultaneous project collaboration and browser-session privacy give teams flexibility without requiring an account for basic file processing.
Cons: Subtitle uploads are limited to 10 MB, which can rule out larger subtitle files even when the related media workflow accepts much larger files.
Cons: Transcription beyond 10 minutes and translation require credits, so heavier AI use adds cost beyond the free plan.
Cons: The Pro allowance is capped at 1,500 credits monthly, making it less suitable for usage that regularly exceeds its stated approximate transcription capacity.

Alternatives

Choose Subtitle Edit if you want a free, open-source subtitle editor for Windows, macOS or Linux rather than Editsub's web-based, credit-supported transcription and translation workflow.

SRTGen is another freemium web option, with an API platform and a free tier that includes SRT, VTT and TXT export, 2 GB of storage and a five-minute screen-recording limit; consider it when those localization and screen-recording terms fit your project better.

EZTitles is a paid Windows option with a free trial, for readers who prefer that platform-specific route.

FAB Subtitler is a paid Windows alternative.

Amara is a freemium API and web alternative whose work is available under the AGPL open-source license.

Subvideo.ai is a freemium web alternative with guest and free-account options.

Verdict

Choose Editsub if you want one browser-based workspace for subtitle editing, precise timing, short free transcriptions and AI translation, especially when collaborators need to share a project. Its best reason to look elsewhere is workload: the 10 MB subtitle-file ceiling and credit-based costs for longer transcription or translation put a clear boundary around larger, frequent jobs.
