Overview

Algolia combines keyword and semantic search through a REST interface, with support for vector and faceted search. The company says its average search response time is under 20 milliseconds and that it processes more than 1 billion queries every 5 seconds; those figures convey its scale ambitions, not a guarantee for any particular application. Its stated use cases range from retail and ecommerce to manufacturing, media, financial services, site search, and enterprise search.

Its feature set reaches beyond retrieval: teams can use autocomplete, query categorization, merchandising, analytics, A/B testing, personalization, AI Synonyms, and AI Ranking to shape and assess results. That makes it more attractive for services where search is a product experience to manage, rather than a basic lookup box. NeuralSearch, AI Collections, and Smart Groups are reserved for Elevate, however, so the most advanced search capabilities require an annual enterprise agreement.

Key features

InstantSearch libraries cover JavaScript, React, Vue, Angular, iOS, and Android, with API clients for multiple programming languages. The range gives developers options across web and mobile implementations. Integrations include Adobe, BigCommerce, commercetools, Supabase, Shopify, Salesforce, Segment, and Google Tag Manager, which can help fit search into storefront and analytics workflows.

Algolia lists SOC 2, ISO 27001:2022, ISO 27017, GDPR, CCPA, and BSI Cloud Computing Compliance Criteria Catalogue in its Trust Center, along with encrypted data transmission and data encryption among its security controls. Support ranges from community access to 24/7 enterprise-grade response times; professional services are optional.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes 10K search requests/month, 50K records, 5K recommendation requests/month, and 5K crawls/month, with no credit card required. Its 1 GB index size and 20 maximum indices per application make it a sensible starting point for new projects, startups, and small stores, but not a roomy long-term allowance for growing catalogs.

Grow costs 0.50 USD per month, billed Monthly, with no contract required. It includes 10K search requests/month and 100K records, then charges $0.40 per additional 1K records; it also provides 10 rules/index, 30 days analytics retention, and US, UK, or EU hosting. Compared with Free, the larger index allowance—100 GB—and 50 indices per application matter more to projects with larger data needs, while the included search request quota remains 10K/month.

Grow Plus costs 1.75 USD per month, billed Monthly, with no contract required. Its included search and record quotas match Grow, with the same $0.40 per additional 1K records, 100 GB index size, and 50 indices per application. It raises rules to 10,000 per index and adds AI Synonyms, AI Ranking, Advanced Personalization, and 90 days analytics retention. It suits teams that need richer relevance controls and longer analytics history; the higher fee does not buy more included search requests.

Elevate has custom pricing under an Annual contract, with volume-based discounts and custom search request and record volumes. It adds NeuralSearch, AI Collections, Smart Groups, 99.99% availability, SSO and enhanced SLA access, and enterprise support plans. This is the tier for organizations requiring those capabilities and enterprise terms, rather than teams seeking a small monthly step up. Grow and Grow Plus list US, UK, and EU hosting locations; Elevate lists global hosting.

Platforms

Algolia supports Android, iOS, web, and API use, with cloud deployment and a REST query interface. Its platform reach and client libraries help teams build across mobile and web, while the cloud model will not suit organizations that require another deployment approach.

Who it's for

Algolia is a strong fit for developers and product teams at retailers, publishers, and other services that need to tune search relevance, measure performance, and support multiple platforms. The free plan is useful for exploration and smaller projects; Grow Plus is more compelling when AI ranking and personalization justify its fee. Teams needing custom volume, NeuralSearch, or enterprise availability and support should consider Elevate. A basic search need with little appetite for ongoing tuning may not warrant Algolia's broader feature set.

Pros and cons

Pros: Hybrid, vector, and faceted search plus merchandising and analytics give teams multiple ways to shape and evaluate discovery.
Pros: Mobile and web libraries, broad API client support, and integrations with major commerce and analytics services accommodate varied stacks.
Cons: Free is capped at 1 GB and 20 indices per application, while its monthly search quota is 10K; larger projects must account for limits and potential record charges.
Cons: NeuralSearch and several enterprise capabilities require Elevate's annual contract, and Grow Plus adds relevance tools without increasing the included search quota.

Alternatives

Prefixbox Search Analytics is worth considering for retailers with more than 150,000 searches per month: its free plan is designed for that volume and includes over 100 search metrics. Searchanise may better fit a smaller store that wants product-count pricing, with a free tier for up to 25 products and a $19.00 USD per month Basic plan for up to 1,5k products.

Bloomreach Content, Constructor, Empathy Platform, Unbxd, and Nosto are paid alternatives. Seekora Analytics offers a freemium option, including a free plan with 1k searches and 2k documents per month.

Verdict

Choose Algolia if search is central to your app or storefront and your team will actively tune relevance across web and mobile. Its standout advantage is the combination of search methods, relevance controls, and developer coverage; its main drawback is that quotas constrain the entry plans while the strongest capabilities require an annual enterprise tier. Smaller or simpler projects should start with Free and reassess capacity before committing to paid usage.
