Overview

Alfred launches apps and searches files and the web, learning usage patterns to prioritize results. That makes it a practical choice for people who regularly return to the same apps and files. Its free core stays focused on launching and file search; clipboard history, snippets, workflows, and advanced file actions require Powerpack.

The distinction is clear: occasional app launching does not require an upgrade, while users who want a customizable keyboard-led toolkit will find more reason to pay. Alfred’s preferences and usage settings are stored locally on the Mac, according to its maker. Workflows may still contact external servers or APIs, so local storage does not mean every workflow is offline.

Key features

Search and file actions

Search adapts to a user’s habits, which can make frequent app and file lookups more direct. Powerpack adds file-system navigation, previews, and actions to email, move, copy, or reveal files in Finder. These additions suit people who handle files repeatedly; users who mainly need to find and open them can stay with the free core.

Clipboard, snippets, and workflows

Powerpack’s Clipboard History saves copied text, images, and file paths, while Snippets expand short keywords into saved text. Workflows connect objects to automate tasks and can be triggered by hotkey, keyword, or a button in Alfred Remote. The maker lists workflows for services and apps including Dash, Twitter, Spotify, and YouTube, and says workflows can connect to app APIs. This flexibility is valuable for users willing to shape their own routines, but it is not a ready-made substitute for a dedicated tool when all that is needed is basic launching.

Remote and syncing

Alfred Remote is an iOS companion for controlling Alfred on a Mac; its core actions require the Mac and iOS device to share a network. Powerpack can sync preferences between Macs through Dropbox or a similar file-syncing service. These features help users working across their own devices, but Remote does not make Alfred a standalone iOS launcher.

Pricing

Alfred uses a freemium model. Alfred core costs 0.00 USD per free and covers app launching and file searching, making it the sensible starting point for users who do not need automation or Powerpack utilities.

The Single License costs 34.00 USD per once. It covers one user on two of their own Macs for the current version, and suits an individual who wants Powerpack on a pair of Macs. The license is not a multi-user plan, and its coverage is for the current version.

Mega Supporter costs 59.00 USD per once for one user’s own Macs and includes lifetime free upgrades. It is the better fit for an individual who values upgrades over time; compared with the Single License, it costs more but removes the current-version limit on upgrades. Both paid plans are for individual use, not seats for a team.

Platforms

Alfred’s main app is for macOS. Version 5.8.1 requires macOS 10.14 or later and supports 64-bit Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. Alfred Remote is an iOS app, but its core control actions depend on a Mac and iOS device sharing a network.

Who it's for

Alfred is a strong fit for Mac users who prefer keyboard-led app and file access and want the option to add custom workflows, clipboard history, or text expansion. It is less suitable for people who need a cross-platform desktop launcher, a standalone mobile tool, or a team license. Users who only need app launching and file search have little reason to buy Powerpack.

Pros and cons

Pros: The free core covers app launching and file search, so basic use does not require a purchase.
Pros: Powerpack combines clipboard history, snippets, workflows, and file actions, offering room to tailor repeated tasks.
Pros: Local storage of preferences and usage settings keeps those settings on the Mac, while workflows can connect to apps’ APIs.
Cons: The advanced features require a paid individual license, which does not cover team use.
Cons: Alfred’s main app is Mac-only; Remote requires a Mac and shared network for core actions.
Cons: The Single License covers only the current version, so users seeking lifetime free upgrades need the more expensive Mega Supporter plan.

Alternatives

App Launcher Software is a useful starting point for comparing launchers. Choose Raycast instead if its free plan’s core features, thousands of extensions, three months of Clipboard History, and five Notes better match your needs, or if you need its listed support for Windows as well as Mac and iOS. Choose Launchy if you want a free launcher with a pay-what-you-want option and support for Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows. KISS Launcher is an Android-only, GPL-published launcher for readers who want that platform and license. ADW Launcher is another freemium Android option. dmenu is a free Linux dynamic menu under the MIT/X Consortium License; foot is a free Wayland terminal emulator for Linux. Keypirinha is Windows freeware with no nag screen, time limit, or ads, while SyMenu is free Windows freeware for Windows 10 and 11, in 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

Verdict

Choose Alfred if you use a Mac, value keyboard-led search, and expect to build workflows or use Powerpack’s file and clipboard tools. Its free core makes a low-commitment launcher, while the paid licenses make sense for individuals who will use the added capabilities. Look elsewhere if you need cross-platform desktop support, a standalone mobile app, or licensing for a team.
