Overview

Alcohol 52% supports CCD, CUE, ISO, BWF, CDI, MDS and NRG image formats, with persistent mounts and capacity for up to 31 virtual CD/DVD-ROM drives. That makes it useful for keeping a collection of disc images accessible as virtual discs. The trade-off is that mounting is the extent of its imaging workflow: it does not write images.

The maker describes home users working with game CDs and movie DVDs, plus librarians and school administrators archiving recordable media, as intended users. The CSS restriction matters for anyone expecting to back up protected movie DVDs: Alcohol 52% cannot do that because of legal restrictions.

Key features

Virtual drives: Up to 31 drives can keep multiple images available without swapping physical discs, a practical advantage for users who revisit a broad collection.
Broad image compatibility: Support for CCD, CUE, ISO, BWF, CDI, MDS and NRG accommodates several common optical image formats.
Persistent mounts: Images can remain mounted, suiting users who want recurring access without remounting each time.
Mounting rather than authoring: Optical image mounting is supported, but image writing is not; choose another tool if creating or writing images is central to the job.

Pricing

The 15-day trial costs 0.00 USD per free and is for Windows except 98/ME. The maker describes a 15-day evaluation period whose capabilities are limited only by the available virtual drives, making it a straightforward way to assess the mounting workflow before paying.

The Free Edition costs 0.00 USD per free and runs on Windows except 98/ME. It is marked “Not for Business use,” so it fits personal use rather than workplace deployment.

The paid Alcohol 52% license costs 27.00 USD per once, includes lifetime free upgrades, and requires online activation. It is the option for users who need a paid license and ongoing upgrades; no recurring price is attached to the single-license purchase. Alcohol Soft also offers manuals, FAQs, a support forum staffed by its team, and direct email contact.

Platforms

Alcohol 52% is for Windows. Downloads are offered for Windows operating systems except Windows 98/ME, which rules it out for users on those older systems and on other platforms.

Who it's for

Home users who want game CD or movie DVD images available through virtual drives, and librarians or school administrators preserving recordable media collections, are the clearest fit. The 31-drive ceiling and persistent mounts help when several images need to stay accessible. Business users should not rely on the free edition, and anyone needing image writing or CSS-protected DVD backups should look elsewhere.

Alcohol Soft says it collects site interaction information, operating system and IP address, and says those details do not contain personally identifiable information. Its privacy policy also says users may opt into the Bright Data network in exchange for some premium features and can turn that choice off in settings. The license agreement says Alcohol 120% installs Bright Data components and provides controls to enable or disable Bright Data in app settings.

Pros and cons

Pro — Up to 31 virtual drives: A substantial number of images can be available at once instead of requiring physical disc swaps.
Pro — Persistent mounts and seven image formats: These support a recurring, varied image collection rather than a single-format or one-off use.
Con — No image writing: Users who need to create or write image files will need another tool.
Con — CSS-protected DVD backup is unavailable: That excludes a common movie-disc use case.
Con — Free Edition is noncommercial: Business users need a paid license rather than the free edition.
Con — Windows only, excluding 98/ME: Users on other platforms or those legacy Windows versions cannot use the listed downloads.

Verdict

Alcohol 52% is a sensible choice for Windows users who mainly need to mount a varied collection of CD and DVD images and keep many available at once. Its 31-drive capacity, persistent mounts and lifetime upgrades on the 27.00 USD per once license are the strongest reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if you need to write images, work outside supported Windows versions, use the free edition commercially, or back up CSS-protected DVDs.
