Overview

Netdata brings metrics, logs, dashboards, alerts, and machine-learning capabilities into an infrastructure monitoring platform. It supports per-second metrics and ML-based anomaly detection and troubleshooting, which makes it a strong fit for teams that need to spot changes quickly rather than rely only on slower reporting cycles.

Deployment can be managed through Netdata Cloud or run on-premises, including in air-gapped environments. Netdata says metrics stay on the user's infrastructure and only metadata reaches the cloud, a meaningful distinction for organizations with data-sovereignty requirements. It also lists agentless monitoring, VM monitoring, and service monitoring.

Key features

Metrics and logs: The agent combines both with dashboards and alerts, giving infrastructure teams a shared view of activity and a way to respond to changes.
Broad integrations: Netdata lists more than 800 collectors and notification channels, including Slack, PagerDuty, Microsoft Teams, email, and webhooks. That range can connect monitoring to common alert workflows without limiting teams to a single notification route.
Multiple data formats: Ingestion includes Prometheus, OpenMetrics, StatsD, and OpenTelemetry; export includes Prometheus Remote Write, InfluxDB, Graphite, OpenTSDB, and TimescaleDB. This makes Netdata more adaptable for teams already using those formats.
Security and access: Netdata Cloud is SOC 2 Type 2 certified. Business includes SSO and role-based access control, which are more relevant to organizations managing access across teams than to a small personal deployment.
Mobile alerts: Native Android and iOS apps provide alerts and notifications, so users can receive monitoring updates away from a desktop.

Pricing

The Community plan is free and allows up to five active connected nodes and one active custom dashboard per room. That is a useful entry point for a small setup, but those limits can constrain teams monitoring more systems or organizing multiple dashboards.

Business costs $4.50 per month billed annually, with a total cost of $540.00/year. It includes unlimited metrics and logs, unlimited custom dashboards, and unlimited data retention. The removal of the Community plan's node and dashboard caps makes it the clearer fit for larger monitoring needs, though the annual billing commitment is important to account for.

Homelab costs $90.00 per year and includes unlimited nodes with fair usage. It suits a home-lab environment that needs more nodes than Community permits, but its fair-usage condition distinguishes it from Business's stated unlimited metrics, logs, dashboards, and retention.

Signing up for Netdata Cloud provides a 14-day Business trial for any number of nodes without limits. Documentation and community support are available, with premium support also offered.

Platforms

Netdata lists Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows. Its stated operating-system coverage for monitoring is Linux and Windows. The mix of mobile apps, web access, and self-hosted deployment gives teams several ways to access the product, while the on-premises and air-gapped options support more restricted environments.

Who it's for

Netdata is aimed at platform engineers, DevOps teams, SREs, developers, system administrators, CISOs, DBAs, network engineers, and MSPs. Its per-second metrics, anomaly detection, varied integrations, and deployment choices make it especially relevant to teams responsible for monitoring infrastructure across different systems. A small user or team that needs only a few nodes may find Community sufficient; organizations needing more nodes, dashboards, or retention should consider a paid plan.

Pros and cons

Pros: Per-second metrics and anomaly detection support timely monitoring and investigation.
Pros: Broad format support and 800+ collectors and notification channels help accommodate varied data pipelines and alert destinations.
Pros: On-premises and air-gapped options, with metrics kept on the user's infrastructure give organizations more control over deployment and data location.
Cons: Community is capped at five active connected nodes and one active custom dashboard per room, limiting its usefulness as monitoring needs expand.
Cons: Business is billed annually, with a total cost of $540.00/year, so the monthly equivalent does not represent a month-to-month term.

Alternatives

openITCOCKPIT is worth considering for readers who want a fully free Community Edition for infrastructure and application monitoring. Site24x7 Server Monitoring offers a Lite Infrastructure Monitoring plan at $9.00 per month paid annually, also listed at $10/month, with limits of 2 servers, 5 websites, and 25 c.

Netreo is another paid option. Checkmk has a forever-free Community plan with 2000+ pre-built integrations, up to about 100 hosts, and community support, making it a possible choice for readers whose host limit and free-plan terms suit their needs. Icinga offers a free, open-source edition with unlimited hosts and services for readers seeking that model.

Mackerel may fit smaller monitoring setups: its free plan covers five standard and micro hosts total, 500 metrics, one day of data retention, 10 monitoring rules, and one custom dashboard. Nagios XI has a free self-supported plan capped at 7 nodes or 100 services, whichever comes first. Sensu Go offers a free plan for 100 nodes and one site.

Verdict

Netdata is a strong choice for infrastructure teams that need fast metrics and anomaly detection, broad integration support, and a choice between managed cloud and controlled on-premises deployment. Its main trade-off is scale on the free plan: five nodes and one custom dashboard per room may not go far, while Business requires annual billing. Choose it for its monitoring breadth and deployment flexibility; look elsewhere if those free-plan caps or the annual Business term do not fit.
