Overview

Ahrefs is an SEO and marketing platform for businesses and publishers that need keyword, competitor, backlink and site-audit research in one toolkit. It is strongest for teams that can work within defined project and keyword allowances; its free tier is a useful starting point, but serious ongoing research requires a paid plan.

Key features

SEO research and monitoring

Keyword research, competitor research, backlink analysis and rank tracking cover the core work of understanding search demand, rival sites, links and ranking movement. Site Audit adds technical checks, while Content Explorer can uncover web mentions and link prospects. This breadth suits practitioners who want research and site maintenance together, though the plan caps mean larger portfolios may need a higher tier.

Content, AI and integrations

AI Content Helper is aimed at improving content, and Ask Ahrefs is free during beta on Lite and higher plans. Ahrefs also offers API and MCP access, a native integration, Looker Studio integration and connections to AI chatbots. These options make the platform relevant beyond browser-based SEO workflows. Multilingual customer support is available five days a week, with a median first response time of 5:58 minutes.

Ahrefs says its index contains 170 trillion pages, its database tracks 41.9 billion keywords and filters 28.7 billion, and AhrefsBot crawls 8 billion pages daily. Those figures signal substantial data infrastructure, but users should weigh the concrete project, keyword and crawl-credit limits attached to each plan.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and offers site data and fixes with limited access to Site Explorer and Site Audit. It can help owners address their own site's needs, but it is not equivalent to the broader paid research plans.

Starter costs 29.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and covers keyword and competitor research. It is the lowest-cost paid entry for search and competitor research, but the supplied plan terms do not give its project, keyword or crawl-credit allowances.

Lite costs 129.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes 1 user, 5 projects, 750 tracked keywords and 100,000 crawl credits per month. Its 25,000-page maximum per project makes it a practical fit for a small portfolio, but a single included seat and finite crawl budget constrain collaborative or larger-scale work. Two additional users cost $40/mo each.

Standard costs 249.00 USD per month, billed monthly, with 1 included user, 20 projects, 2,000 tracked keywords and 500,000 monthly crawl credits. It is a meaningful step up for a broader portfolio; up to 5 additional users cost $60/mo each.

Advanced costs 449.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and raises allowances to 50 projects, 5,000 tracked keywords and 1,500,000 monthly crawl credits, still with 1 included user. It suits heavier monitoring needs, although added collaboration raises the bill: up to 10 extra users cost $80/mo each.

Enterprise costs 1499.00 USD per month with an annual commitment required. It starts with 3 included users, 10,000 tracked keywords and 5,000,000 monthly crawl credits, and includes unlimited historical data. Unlimited additional users, access management, audit logs, SSO, two-factor authentication and ISO27001 certification position it for organizations with larger teams and security requirements.

Annual payment saves up to 17%. There is no stated trial or refund policy. Separate prompt packages cost 50.00 USD per month for 2,500 checks with $0.020/check overage, 100.00 USD per month for 7,000 checks with $0.015/check overage, or 250.00 USD per month for 25,000 checks with $0.010/check overage. Brand Radar starts at 199.00 USD per month for AI research and prompt tracking.

Platforms

Ahrefs offers web tools and API access, alongside AI assistants and MCP access. Its integrations include Looker Studio and AI chatbots. This is a web-and-programmatic offering rather than a platform choice for users seeking a desktop app.

Who it's for

Ahrefs is a strong fit for SEO professionals, agencies and in-house teams that need research, rank monitoring, backlink analysis and site audits together, and can match plan allowances to their workload. Solo users can start with the free tier or Starter; teams should account for paid extra seats. It is less compelling for users who need broad collaboration at a low cost or whose project and crawl needs exceed the cheaper tiers.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad SEO coverage: Research, tracking, backlink analysis and audits live alongside content discovery tools.
Useful entry points: A free plan provides site data and fixes, while Starter offers paid keyword and competitor research from 29.00 USD per month.
Scale options: Higher tiers increase project, keyword and crawl allowances, and Enterprise adds unlimited historical data and team administration.
Responsive multilingual support: Support runs five days a week with a median first response of 5:58 minutes.

Cons

Paid plans include one user until Enterprise: Extra seats cost more on Lite, Standard and Advanced, making team growth a separate budget decision.
Usage is capped below Enterprise: Project, keyword and crawl-credit limits can require an upgrade as a portfolio expands.
Enterprise requires an annual commitment: Its higher capacity and security features come with a substantial monthly price and a longer commitment.
No stated trial or refund policy: Buyers cannot rely on a trial period or refund terms when evaluating a paid subscription.

Alternatives

Semrush is worth comparing if its free tier of one demo project and 10 reports per day better matches a limited initial evaluation. Rankora may suit users who want a free forever plan with one monthly audit and 50 keywords, or a 29.00 USD monthly Growth plan with 5,000 keywords and up to three competitors.

Topvisor offers a free XS plan with unlimited projects and keywords, making it an option for readers prioritizing those allowances. SEO PowerSuite may fit a project-level start: its free plan includes one project, 500 URLs, 1,100 backlinks and one competitor per project.

Wranker has a free starter plan with one project, 500 keywords, daily audits and rank tracking, plus eight monthly content briefs. Mangools is another freemium alternative, with a free plan and paid Basic and Premium plans whose tracked-keyword allowances are 200 and 700.

MarketMuse is an alternative for content work, with a free plan limited to one user and 10 queries per month and no site inventory or tracked topics. Raven Tools is another option to compare.

Verdict

Choose Ahrefs if you want a broad SEO research and audit toolkit with content features, APIs and room to scale into higher allowances. Its main advantage is the range of work it brings together; its main drawback is that included seats and usage caps make the advertised entry price an incomplete guide for teams with heavier needs. Compare the project, keyword, crawl and seat limits before committing.
