Overview

CurseForge is a Minecraft catalog for finding and downloading mods and modpacks, with more than 10,000 projects. It is best for players who want to explore a broad library and organize or share mod setups. The free catalog does the core job; Premium is for people who value ad-free access, direct downloads and desktop customization.

Key features

The catalog covers Forge, Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt, with game-version filters and dependency information to help narrow choices and understand mod relationships. Download tracking and collections give players ways to keep tabs on what they use. These aids make a large catalog more manageable, but compatibility still depends on the particular setup.

For modpacks, CurseForge supports built-in publishing and server tools, plus sharing by profile code or export as a CurseForge .zip. API access is also supported. These features make it useful beyond one-off downloads, especially for players who maintain or share a collection; someone seeking only a single mod may not need them.

Premium removes ads across CurseForge platforms and the desktop client and provides direct downloads without waiting delays. Desktop Premium adds custom themes and layout customization. The client runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, while the catalog is also available on the web.

CurseForge says authors receive 70% of subscription income and cites more than $18 million paid to creators since 2020 and over $20 million overall. That gives Premium a stated creator-support component alongside its convenience features.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes free Minecraft mods and modpacks with web catalog access. The mods themselves are described as completely free, so paying is not necessary to access the catalog's core content.

Premium Monthly is shown with custom pricing in its plan details, while the monthly subscription costs $2.99 per month and is cancel-anytime. Premium Annual is also shown with custom pricing in its plan details; the annual subscription is advertised at $2.50 per month when billed annually, or $30.00 for the year, compared with $35.88 at the monthly rate, a stated 16% saving. The annual option suits subscribers willing to pay for a year upfront; monthly billing costs more over a year but avoids that commitment.

Both paid subscriptions provide ad-free experience, instant downloads and Premium web and desktop access. Subscribers can cancel at any time and retain access through the billing cycle. After Premium ends, the account returns to free membership. Refunds are generally not offered, with exceptions considered individually, so the cancellation flexibility does not remove the risk of paying for a period that cannot generally be refunded. Tebex handles subscription payments.

Platforms

CurseForge offers its catalog on the web and Premium access on web and desktop. The desktop client supports Windows, macOS and Linux. That combination suits players who want a browser catalog with an optional desktop experience, though Premium is needed for ad removal and direct downloads.

Who it's for

CurseForge is a strong fit for Minecraft players who want a large catalog spanning several loaders, useful version and dependency information, and tools to collect, publish or share modpacks. The free tier is the sensible starting point for anyone mainly seeking mods. Premium makes more sense for regular users bothered by ads or download waits, or desktop users who want theme and layout customization.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free access to Minecraft mods and modpacks keeps the catalog's main purpose available without a subscription.
Pros: Four supported loaders, version filters and dependency information help players focus their search and assess mod relationships.
Pros: Collections, tracking, profile-code sharing, .zip export, publishing and server tools support organizing and distributing modpacks.
Cons: Ad-free use and direct downloads are Premium benefits, so free users give up those conveniences.
Cons: Annual billing requires paying $30.00 upfront, and refunds are generally unavailable.
Cons: Premium's custom themes and layout controls matter mainly to desktop users; they offer little reason to subscribe for someone content with the web catalog.

Alternatives

Choose Modrinth if its broader platform support across web, desktop and API is a better fit, or if its $4.99 per month Modrinth+ plan—with ad-free browsing, creator support and a profile badge—matches what you want from a subscription. ModDex is a free web and API option for people who need a library, stacks, project ratings and reviews, follows or notifications. For modpack creation, FreeMinecraftMods offers a public workflow with no build cap and no plan requirement for generation or export, though saving and publishing require sign-in. MineSpecs is a free, browser-based option for tools and downloads without an account or ads. GameBanana, MC百科, Minecraft Inside and NetherChest are other free options to consider.

For broader comparisons, see Minecraft Mod Browsers, Game Mod Managers, Game Mod Repositories and Minecraft Modpack Builders. Readers focused on a particular tool category can also browse Minecraft Minimap Mods or Minecraft Schematic Tools.

Verdict

Choose CurseForge if you want a broad, free Minecraft mod catalog with useful loader and version filtering and practical modpack organization and sharing. Its main advantage is the combination of free content and tools for managing collections; look elsewhere if you want to avoid ads and download delays without a subscription, or if Premium's desktop extras do not justify its recurring cost.
