Overview

Edpuzzle turns video into assignable lessons for teachers and educational institutions. It is best suited to educators who want students to respond to questions during a video and need to follow their progress. Its focused teaching workflow is appealing, but the Basic plan’s assignment limits and the account requirement for progress tracking can constrain how a class uses it.

Key features

Teachers can build a lesson from a YouTube video, their own upload, or another teacher’s lesson, then add recorded voice and embedded questions. That range of starting points makes it practical to adapt existing video material, though Edpuzzle is designed for instruction rather than general-purpose video editing. Its Question Generator can place multiple-choice or open-ended questions automatically, but may be unavailable when a video lacks enough information; teachers should treat it as a drafting aid, not a guarantee of suitable questions.

Teachers can assign lessons and monitor progress in real time while students work at their own pace. Quizzes and assessments and annotations are supported, and videos can run up to 120 minutes. Students need an Edpuzzle account for teachers to track their assignment progress. Open classes do not require accounts, which lowers the entry barrier but does not provide that tracking.

Edpuzzle integrates with Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, Canvas, Schoology, Moodle, Blackboard, Blackbaud, Clever, ClassLink, D2L Brightspace, and eKadence. The Google Classroom add-on lets teachers create and manage assignments in Classroom, and students can complete lessons there without a separate Edpuzzle account. That is the clearest fit for classrooms already organized around Google Classroom.

The Chrome extension can import YouTube videos into a teacher’s Edpuzzle library and provides screen recording. Students can use the iOS and Android apps to access and complete assignments. Edpuzzle also offers self-paced courses on platform use, project-based learning, flipped classrooms, and gamification, along with support for teachers.

Edpuzzle says it collects the minimum student information needed to create accounts and does not sell or rent personal information to third parties. Its COPPA notice says it participates in iKeepSafe’s FTC-approved COPPA Safe Harbor Program, holds iKeepSafe FERPA, COPPA, and CSPC seals, and is a Student Privacy Pledge signatory. These are relevant assurances for school use, alongside the need to consider whether student accounts are appropriate for a particular class.

Pricing

The freemium lineup ranges from a capped free plan to an individual paid plan and a school plan with custom pricing.

Basic — 0.00 USD per free. Includes 20 interactive activities to assign without limits and 10 supported assignments. It is a sensible starting point for a teacher with modest assignment needs, but the 10-assignment cap may become restrictive even when the activity allowance is not.
Pro Teacher — 13.75 USD per month (billed monthly/billed annually). Includes unlimited interactive activities and 120 supported assignments. Teachers who need more can add supported assignments for a total of 250 for +$19.25/month (annual plans only). This is the more capable individual option, but the assignment ceiling still matters for larger or sustained workloads.
Pro School — custom pricing. Provides supported assignments for every teacher, multi-lingual closed captions, standards-aligned content, and robust admin and security tools. Its school-wide scope and administration features suit institutions rather than an individual teacher seeking a low-cost upgrade.

Platforms

Edpuzzle is available on Android, iOS, the web, and as a Chrome extension. The mobile apps are for students completing video assignments; the extension supports teacher workflows such as importing YouTube videos and screen recording.

Who it's for

Edpuzzle is a strong match for teachers who want to turn video into a structured lesson, assign it at student pace, and check progress. It is less suitable when a course needs more than 10 supported assignments on the free plan, when tracked progress must be available without student accounts, or when the goal is broad video production rather than classroom assignments.

Pros and cons

Pro: Flexible lesson sources. Teachers can work from YouTube, their own videos, or another teacher’s lesson, then add voice and questions.
Pro: Classroom workflow. Real-time progress checks, LMS integrations, and Google Classroom assignment management support lesson delivery in established school systems.
Pro: School-oriented privacy commitments. Edpuzzle cites COPPA, FERPA, and CSPC seals and the Student Privacy Pledge, and says it does not sell or rent personal information.
Con: Basic has a tight assignment cap. Its 10 supported assignments can limit ongoing classroom use despite the 20 interactive activities allowance.
Con: Progress tracking depends on accounts. Open classes avoid the account requirement, but teachers cannot use them for assignment progress tracking.
Con: Automated questions have a boundary. The generator may be unavailable for videos without enough information, so it cannot be relied on for every lesson.

Alternatives

For broader options, browse Interactive Video Software or Interactive Lesson Makers.

Adventr is another freemium option with a free plan and a Creator plan at 29.00 USD per month (billed Monthl); consider it if its broader platform availability is a better fit. Apester has a paid model, a free plan, and a free trial, and may suit readers comparing a paid alternative. Stornaway is freemium, with Editing and Hosting plans described by project and island limits; it is worth considering if those units match the work. Videowise is a paid option with a free trial and a Content Creation plan starting at 99.00 USD per once; it may fit readers seeking that offering rather than Edpuzzle’s classroom assignment focus. Smartzer is a paid, usage-based option with shoppable video and live shopping. Klynt and VidVersity are paid alternatives. Cinema8 is freemium with a free plan and trial; its Free plan includes 1 seat, 2 GB storage, 500 GB bandwidth, and 10 videos, making it an option for readers comparing a capped video plan.

Verdict

Choose Edpuzzle if you teach with video and want embedded questions, assignment delivery, and progress checks in a school-oriented platform. Its classroom integrations and flexible lesson creation are the main reasons to choose it; look elsewhere if the Basic assignment cap is too low or you need tracked progress without student accounts.
