Tazama
What it is
Tazama is open-source software for monitoring transactions in real time to detect fraud and related money-laundering typologies. It evaluates current transaction data together with historical participant behavior, applies configurable rules and thresholds, and can block high-risk transactions or send alerts for investigation. Analysts build and review rules visually, replay earlier transactions, and submit changes before deployment. Connection Studio and DEMS map and ingest message formats, including ISO 20022 payment messages. Investigators triage, assign, investigate, file, and close alerts in a case system that records decisions. BIAR combines detection and case results in a lakehouse with dashboards and calibration notebooks. Configuration changes, case actions, triage decisions, and workflow transitions are audited. Docker Compose supports evaluation on one machine; deployment guidance covers on-premises Kubernetes, EKS, GKE, and AKS. The software plan is free.
For and against
For
- Real-time transaction scoring and blocking
- Visual rule creation with replay and review
- Supports ISO 20022 payment messages
- Includes alert case management
- Audits configuration and workflow actions
Against
- Hosting, implementation, and support require resources
- Production deployment requires infrastructure
- Private rule repositories have restricted access
- No software or license charge does not remove operating costs
The verdict
Tazama provides open-source monitoring, rule management, investigation cases, analytics, and audit trails. The software is free, but organizations must provide hosting and implementation resources.
Who it suits
Tazama is aimed at central banks, payment advisers, banks, government agencies, and financial institutions. It suits teams needing transaction monitoring, configurable rules, case handling, and audited workflows.
