Redash

What it is

Redash is an open-source platform for querying data, creating visualizations, building interactive dashboards, and sharing results with an organization. Its query editor provides schema browsing, autocomplete, keyboard shortcuts, and reusable snippets. Visualizations include charts, cohort views, pivot tables, boxplots, maps, counters, sankey diagrams, sunbursts, and word clouds. Dashboards can combine multiple data sources, be shared by URL, or appear as embedded widgets. Users can schedule result refreshes and create alerts for data events. Listed sources include Amazon services, BigQuery, PostgreSQL, Snowflake, MongoDB, Google Analytics, Google Spreadsheets, JIRA, and Salesforce. Redash offers a REST API with user or query keys, plus password, Google OAuth, and SAML 2.0 authentication. Official deployment uses Linux, Docker, and Docker Compose. The hosted app.redash.io service shut down November 30, 2021; self-hosting is free.

For and against

For

  • Open-source self-hosted software
  • Broad database and service connectors
  • Interactive dashboards with embedding
  • Scheduled refreshes and data alerts
  • REST API with scoped query keys

Against

  • Hosted service shut down in 2021
  • Large deployments need additional servers
  • Self-hosting requires Linux and Docker
  • Password login may need disabling

The verdict

Redash provides a broad, free toolkit for teams willing to run the software themselves. The main practical constraint is that hosted access is no longer available, so deployment and maintenance remain with the user.

Who it suits

It suits SQL users and organizations that can host their own analytics service and need shared queries, dashboards, visualizations, alerts, or scheduled updates.
