Pocket Code
Graz, Austria
What it is
Pocket Code is a free mobile app for creating programs, games, animations, and stories by joining visual programming bricks. Catrobat says it is suitable for children and teenagers without prior programming knowledge, as well as more experienced programmers. Its building blocks include if-else statements, loops, variables, mathematical functions, and access to phone sensors. Users can browse, download, review, and remix community programs through Explore and pocketcode.org. Hardware extensions connect Pocket Code to Arduino boards, Mindstorms and Phiro robots, and Raspberry Pi pins. Arduino connects over Bluetooth for changing digital and PWM pins and reading analog pins; Mindstorms robots connect to a device over Bluetooth for programming and control. Catrobat presents the app as a constructive learning tool for classrooms and points learners to a wiki and a free Pocket Code MOOC in English and German. The app is available for Android and iOS. Catrobat says project hosting is no longer available as a service, though its media library remains accessible through the wiki. The project is free and open source and is driven by the International Catrobat Association and Graz University of Technology’s Institute of Software Technology.
