Phoenix ELN
What it is
Phoenix ELN is a free, open-source electronic lab notebook for Windows, designed for organic, organometallic and peptide chemistry. Its protocols arrange reactants, reagents, solvents, comments, products, images and files in workflow order. Adding materials supplies stoichiometric details such as equivalents and millimoles. A self-learning materials database contains nearly 200 commonly used reagents, solvents and auxiliaries, with cross-checked molecular weights and densities. The integrated drawing editor supports organic, organometallic, peptide and resin-bound structures. Reaction substructure searches can cover local experiments, while an optional server database enables searches across finalized organizational experiments. The notebook runs without a server connection and supports offline access. An optional in-house server adds continuous backup and experiment sharing, with MySQL or MariaDB installation support. Protocols export to PDF/A-3b with inserted documents embedded as attachments; ZIP, JPEG, PNG and TIF are also listed.
For and against
For
- Free plan with no cost
- Works offline without a server
- Automatic stoichiometric calculations
- Nearly 200 materials in database
- PDF/A-3b protocol export
Against
- Windows target platform
- Organization-wide search needs optional server
- Commercial support excludes this project
The verdict
Phoenix ELN combines chemistry-focused protocol entry, stoichiometry, molecular drawing and searchable experiments at no cost. Its optional server extends collaboration, while the Windows-only target and separate support arrangement matter when choosing it.
Who it suits
It suits chemistry users who need a Windows notebook for structured experiment protocols, reaction searching and chemical drawing. It also fits organizations wanting optional shared searches, backups and experiment sharing.
