Chemotion ELN
What it is
Chemotion ELN is a web-based electronic laboratory notebook for managing research data, especially chemistry work. Projects are organized into collections containing samples, reactions, wellplates, research plans, QR codes, barcodes, and analytical data through ChemSpectra. Sample records can hold molecular structures, amounts, and properties such as purity, while reaction records document conditions and products. Instrument data from examples including NMR, GC, and LC can be transferred by email, networked storage, or manually. Institutions, universities, and research groups can install the ELN on their own facilities using documented Docker-based procedures. Selected information can move to Chemotion Repository for sharing and archiving. OpenStats and a TLC Image Annotation Tool are supported third-party applications. Authentication includes database login, Shibboleth, OpenID Connect, ORCID, GitHub, and NFDI AAI. Academic researchers are intended to receive free access. The demonstration instance is time-limited, may lose data, and omits some functions. Chrome is recommended; Firefox and Edge have limited functionality in some areas.
For and against
For
- Chemistry-focused sample and reaction records
- Self-hosted institutional deployment
- Multiple authentication options
- Instrument data transfer methods
- Academic free-use principle
Against
- Requires a network connection
- No standalone offline version
- Firefox and Edge have limited functions
- Versioning and auditing are still being worked on
The verdict
Chemotion ELN provides structured chemistry records, integrations, and self-hosting options for research organizations. Teams should account for browser limitations, network dependence, and the unfinished audit systems.
Who it suits
Chemotion ELN suits chemistry-focused research groups and academic institutions managing samples, reactions, and instrument data. It can also interest biochemistry teams and organizations able to host a web application.
