RSpace
What it is
RSpace is an open-source electronic research notebook and research data management platform for research workflows. Its web application supports real-time collaboration, granular sharing, comments, and annotations. Researchers can draw chemical structures and calculate stoichiometry for reaction planning, while RSpace Inventory tracks samples alongside notebook records. Forms provide structured fields and ontology integration for FAIR metadata. Full-text and metadata search is available, with exports to PDF, Word, HTML, XML, JSON, and RO-Crate. A RESTful API supports custom integrations and workflows. RSpace states that data is encrypted at rest and over networks and supports 21 CFR Part 11 and GLP. Research Space identifies ISO 27001 and SOC 2 certifications. Enterprise deployment can be on premises or in a private AWS instance. The open-source plan is free; paid plans start at $6,000 a year for Team (Academia).
For and against
For
- Open-source electronic research notebook
- Supports real-time collaboration and granular sharing
- Includes chemical drawing and stoichiometry
- Exports to multiple research formats
- Provides RESTful API access
Against
- Paid plans start at $6,000 a year
- Migration cannot transfer Global IDs
- Migration cannot transfer digital signatures
- Migration cannot transfer full audit history
The verdict
RSpace combines notebook documentation, inventory, collaboration, metadata, and research-data exports. Its free self-install option contrasts with substantial annual pricing for managed and enterprise deployments.
Who it suits
It suits researchers, data managers, librarians, stewards, research-computing specialists, and policymakers. Teams needing collaborative ELN records, structured metadata, exports, and API access may benefit.
