Oxigraph
What it is
Oxigraph is a graph database and toolkit for RDF data and SPARQL. It implements SPARQL 1.1 Query, Update, and Federated Query, and handles formats including Turtle, TriG, N-Triples, N-Quads, RDF/XML, and JSON-LD. The project offers a Rust library, Python and JavaScript bindings, and a command-line tool that can start an HTTP server.
The server listens by default on localhost:7878 and includes an HTML interface based on YASGUI for running SPARQL requests. REST endpoints support queries and updates, plus RDF dataset access through the SPARQL Graph Store HTTP Protocol. The CLI can be installed with Cargo, Docker, PyPI, conda-forge, or prebuilt binaries. Pyoxigraph provides in-memory and disk-based stores, and oxrdflib provides rdflib stores using Pyoxigraph. Oxigraph is free under either Apache License 2.0 or MIT, at the user's option. The project states that SPARQL query evaluation has not yet been optimized.
For and against
For
- Implements SPARQL Query, Update, and Federated Query
- Supports multiple RDF data formats
- Offers Rust, Python, and JavaScript interfaces
- Free under Apache 2.0 or MIT
Against
- SPARQL query evaluation has not yet been optimized
- Protecting update endpoints may require an added authentication layer
The verdict
Oxigraph provides several ways to work with RDF data and SPARQL, from libraries to a web server. Its stated query optimization limitation is worth considering for workloads that depend on query performance.
Who it suits
Oxigraph suits developers building RDF and SPARQL applications, especially Rust projects that can reuse its library or standalone crates. Its bindings and command-line server also provide options for Python and JavaScript users.
