Eclipse RDF4J
What it is
Eclipse RDF4J is a free, modular Java framework for parsing, storing, querying, and reasoning over RDF data. It supports SPARQL 1.1 query and update, and its API can access remote RDF repositories through the same interface used for local repositories. Supported formats include RDF/XML, Turtle, N-Triples, N-Quads, JSON-LD, TriG, and TriX. Storage options include a transactional in-memory store with optional disk persistence and a transactional Native Store aimed at medium-sized datasets around 100 million triples. Extensions provide full-text search, RDFS inferencing, rule-based reasoning, SHACL and SPIN validation, and geospatial queries. The SDK bundles libraries, Server, Workbench, Console, and Javadoc API; Workbench supplies a web interface with a SPARQL editor. Developers can obtain RDF4J through Maven artifacts or download an SDK zip or onejar. The latest stable release, 6.1.0, requires Java 25 or newer. RDF4J is distributed under the Eclipse Distribution License 1.0. Its project describes core databases as mainly intended for small to medium-sized datasets and notes that third-party stores may offer greater scalability or additional features.
For and against
For
- Supports SPARQL query and update.
- Works with many RDF data formats.
- Extensions add validation and reasoning tools.
- SDK includes a web SPARQL editor.
Against
- Latest stable release requires Java 25 or newer.
- Core databases mainly target small to medium datasets.
- Third-party stores may offer greater scalability.
The verdict
RDF4J provides Java APIs, storage, query, and extension options for RDF applications. Check the Java requirement and dataset scale against the needs of your project.
Who it suits
RDF4J suits Java developers building applications with RDF, Linked Data, SPARQL endpoints, or Semantic Web data. Its core stores are positioned mainly for small to medium-sized datasets.
