Apache Jena Fuseki
What it is
Apache Jena Fuseki is a SPARQL server for running query and update services on its own or within an application. It supports SPARQL 1.1 and the SPARQL Graph Store protocol, and works with TDB for transactional persistent storage as well as Jena text query. It can be deployed as a standalone server, an operating-system service, an embedded component, or a web application hosted in Apache Tomcat or Jetty. The download ZIP includes the server and interface; Maven artifacts and a WAR distribution are also available. Fuseki Plain removes the interface and can be embedded in an application, letting a Java application offer SPARQL services while accessing and updating datasets. The project also supplies a kit for creating Docker or Docker Compose containers; databases need mounted volumes to remain after container removal. Security uses Apache Shiro, with controls at multiple levels, though graph-level controls apply only to read-only datasets. Fuseki is free, open-source software under Apache License 2.0.
For and against
For
- Supports SPARQL 1.1 query and update protocols.
- Integrates TDB transactional persistent storage.
- Offers standalone, embedded, and web deployments.
- Includes native HTTPS and layered access controls.
- Free under Apache License 2.0.
Against
- Graph-level access control is limited to read-only datasets.
- Default SPARQL endpoints are open.
- Container databases need mounted volumes to persist.
The verdict
Fuseki offers several deployment choices and supports core SPARQL protocols, with storage and security options for application and server use. Check the graph-level restriction and default endpoint exposure when planning access controls.
Who it suits
It suits teams building semantic web or linked data applications that need a self-hosted SPARQL service. Java developers can embed it, while operators can choose server or web-application deployment.
