The review
Overview
Mailprotector is an email-security and management suite built specifically for managed service providers (MSPs). It is best suited to providers overseeing several organizations, particularly Microsoft 365 customers, and its filtering, encryption and archiving products cover both cloud and other mail environments. The main trade-off is product-specific coverage: Shield is currently Microsoft 365-focused, while broader deployment options come through other Mailprotector products.
Key features
Shield combines a secure email gateway with a patented API integration for Microsoft 365. That makes it a focused choice for an MSP standardizing on Microsoft’s platform, but not for a provider that needs the same Shield arrangement for Google Workspace; support for Google Workspace is described as forthcoming.
CloudFilter is the more flexible filtering component. It works wherever the customer controls the MX record, including Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, on-premises servers, hosted environments and POP/IMAP. That range is useful for MSPs supporting mixed estates or customers that have not moved entirely to cloud mail. Mailprotector also provides outbound filtering and impersonation protection, with gateway deployment.
Bracket encrypts messages when the subject contains square brackets. Neither sender nor recipient needs an app, plug-in or password, which removes setup work for external correspondents. AES-256 encryption, one-time sign-in links, 15-minute link expiry and invalidation when a link is opened from another device provide tight access controls. The device rule can nevertheless interrupt a recipient who changes devices before opening the message.
SecureStore captures messages from the point it is enabled. Its default retention period is seven years and can be adjusted up or down, making it suitable for organizations with defined retention policies rather than users seeking a retrospective archive of earlier mail.
Mailprotector says it holds the HIPAA Seal of Compliance from Compliancy Group and is SOC 2 Type 2 certified. ConnectWise, Autotask and Gradient integrations synchronize licensing or service counts and support billing workflows; Mailprotector provides those integrations at no additional charge. Support runs Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM ET, excluding federal holidays.
Pricing
Mailprotector’s commercial products use custom pricing, with current pricing supplied by an account manager. That model fits MSPs that need a service conversation around customer counts and licensing, but it prevents a quick self-serve cost comparison.
Radar
Radar costs nothing and is described as a free email security check. It is a low-commitment way to assess email security, not a substitute for pricing the managed product suite.
Mailprotector products
The product range has no publicly listed price. Prospective buyers should expect a quote rather than a published per-seat or subscription figure.
Platforms
Mailprotector offers API and web access. Microsoft 365 is supported, and CloudFilter also covers Google Workspace, on-premises and hosted servers, and POP/IMAP environments when MX control is available. Shield remains limited to Microsoft 365 at present.
Who it's for
Mailprotector is intended exclusively for MSPs, not as a typical direct-to-consumer mailbox utility. It makes the most sense for providers that need gateway filtering, outbound controls, impersonation protection, encryption and configurable archiving across customer environments, with PSA and billing integrations. An MSP serving Google Workspace or legacy mail can use CloudFilter’s broader coverage, but should not assume Shield provides equivalent Google Workspace support.
Pros and cons
- Pro: CloudFilter supports Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, on-premises, hosted and POP/IMAP setups where MX records are controlled.
- Pro: Bracket delivers AES-256 encryption without recipient software or passwords.
- Pro: Seven-year default SecureStore retention is configurable, and ConnectWise, Autotask and Gradient integrations are free.
- Con: Shield currently supports Microsoft 365 only, limiting it for Google Workspace-led MSPs.
- Con: Commercial pricing requires an account-manager quote, so budgeting cannot be completed from a public rate card.
- Con: Bracket links expire after 15 minutes and fail when opened from another device, constraints that may hinder recipients who switch devices.
Alternatives
For a desktop and mobile-oriented freemium option, MailWasher offers Android, iOS and Windows coverage, including a free tier limited to one email account and no support. Choose JetEmail instead when the goal is email marketing, with API and web access and a free tier for 1,000 subscribers. Apache SpamAssassin is the free, open-source, self-hosted and Linux choice for command-line filtering tools and Perl modules. Rspamd suits users seeking an open-source, self-hosted engine on Linux or macOS, with an optional Scale plan at £100 a month. Cleanmail is a paid, self-hosted or web alternative with a free trial. MailChannels Inbound Filtering is another paid API and web gateway option sold through contact with sales. Mimecast Data Leak Prevention is a web-based paid alternative with Professional and Enterprise plans priced by quote. Mailinblack Protect is a paid API, self-hosted and web option with advanced and essential protection tiers. Broader category comparisons are in Email Anti-Spam Software and Email Security Gateways.
Verdict
Choose Mailprotector if you are an MSP that wants a coordinated email-security portfolio, especially for Microsoft 365, with flexible CloudFilter deployment, recipient-friendly encryption and MSP billing integrations. Look elsewhere if you need transparent product pricing, a consumer-focused tool, or Shield support for Google Workspace today.
