What it is
GnuCash is free, open-source desktop accounting software for personal finances and small businesses. It tracks bank accounts, stocks, income, and expenses, with budgeting, bill tracking, and net-worth tracking tools. Its double-entry system requires each transaction’s debits and credits to balance. Business functions include customer, vendor, and job tracking, invoicing, bill payment, tax and billing terms, and budgeting. Customizable reports cover balance sheets, profit and loss, and portfolio valuation, with charts. GnuCash imports QIF and OFX files and supports matching imported transactions; German users can use HBCI to download statements and initiate transfers and direct debits. Data is stored in XML by default. Support for SQLite3, MySQL, and PostgreSQL is experimental, and some corner cases have reportedly caused data loss. The desktop software has installation options for Linux and installers for macOS and Windows. The project directs users to mailing lists, IRC, a wiki, documentation, and bug reports for help.
For and against
For
- Free under the GNU GPL.
- Includes budgeting, bill, and net-worth tracking.
- Provides customizable financial reports and charts.
- Imports QIF and OFX files with transaction matching.
Against
- Database support beyond XML is experimental.
- No main application for iOS or iPadOS.
- The separate Android app appears abandoned.
The verdict
GnuCash combines personal finance tracking with small-business accounting and reporting at no charge. Its experimental database options and limited mobile availability are important considerations for users choosing where to keep and manage their records.
Who it suits
GnuCash suits individuals and small businesses that want desktop tools for tracking finances and accounting. It is also relevant to German users who want HBCI support.
