Apache NiFi
What it is
Apache NiFi is free, open-source software for automating data flows between systems, including cybersecurity, observability, event stream, and generative AI pipelines. Its browser-based interface supports designing, controlling, and monitoring flows, with feedback as they run. NiFi records and indexes provenance data to track information through the system. Flow controls include guaranteed delivery, back pressure, prioritized queues, and quality-of-service settings for individual flows. Users can change dataflows in real time, applying changes to affected components without stopping the entire flow. Documented processors connect with Kafka, AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, databases, Slack, S3, and Salesforce. Security features include HTTPS, configurable authentication, multi-tenant authorization, and encrypted communications such as TLS and SSH. NiFi runs in a JVM on a host operating system and can be installed from a ZIP archive. It supports clustering and can be scaled down for edge devices through the MiNiFi subproject. The project lists a users mailing list and Slack workspace for help. Its security model makes users responsible for operating-system commands and custom code they configure. NiFi is free to download under the Apache License, Version 2.0.
For and against
For
- Browser interface for designing and monitoring flows
- Tracks data with indexed provenance records
- Changes can take effect without stopping the entire flow
- Connectors include cloud services, databases, and Slack
- Free to download under the Apache License, Version 2.0
Against
- Users are responsible for configured commands and custom code
- Runs in a JVM on a host operating system
The verdict
Apache NiFi offers flow design, tracking, controls, and integrations as free open-source software. Teams configuring operating-system commands or custom code must handle their security.
Who it suits
NiFi suits teams automating data flows across systems, including cybersecurity, observability, event stream, and generative AI pipelines. Its clustering and MiNiFi options also suit deployments that need to scale across hosts or edge devices.
