Apache Beam
What it is
Apache Beam is a free, open-source programming model for building data processing pipelines across batch and streaming workloads. The same Beam model supports both types of processing, and pipelines can run on execution engines known as runners, including Dataflow, Flink, Spark and the Direct Runner. SDKs and quickstarts are available for Java, Python, Go and TypeScript. Beam's model includes transforms such as ParDo, GroupByKey, Flatten and Combine, plus windowing and triggering capabilities. I/O connectors provide read and write transforms for external storage systems and support batch and streaming pipelines; listed examples include BigQuery, Snowflake, Apache Parquet and Apache Iceberg. Beam Playground lets users try transforms and examples without a local installation. Execution costs depend on the selected runner and infrastructure. The project is aimed at data and software developers building pipelines on supported back ends. Beam generally follows semantic versioning with exceptions, and APIs may change before the first stable 1.x release. The project provides community support through its user mailing list, Stack Overflow and Beam Slack channel.
For and against
For
- One model supports batch and streaming workloads.
- Pipelines can use multiple execution engines.
- SDKs available for Java, Python, Go and TypeScript.
- Connectors support external storage read and write.
- Playground examples require no local installation.
Against
- Execution costs depend on runner and infrastructure.
- APIs may change before the first stable 1.x release.
- Semantic versioning has stated exceptions.
The verdict
Beam offers a shared programming model for batch and streaming pipelines, with multiple runners, language SDKs and storage connectors. Plan for infrastructure costs and potential API changes before the first stable 1.x release.
Who it suits
Apache Beam suits data and software developers building batch or streaming pipelines for supported execution back ends. Its SDKs cover Java, Python, Go and TypeScript.
