Apache Hop
What it is
Apache Hop is a free, open-source platform for data integration and orchestration. Users assemble visual pipelines on a canvas, preview rows at individual steps, and monitor live data and metrics during execution. A pipeline can run locally, on Hop Server, on Apache Spark, or on Flink and Dataflow through Apache Beam. Hop includes more than 250 pipeline transforms, over 80 workflow actions, and more than 40 database dialects. Listed connections include PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server, Snowflake, BigQuery, Kafka, Salesforce, SAP, S3, REST, and SFTP. Projects can switch environments between development and production, and credentials can be kept outside pipelines. The software runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows; Hop Web supports modern browsers. Release 2.19.0 requires Java 21. Docker images and a Kubernetes Helm chart are available, though Hop Web is work in progress and provided as-is. The project warns that operations can affect databases, filesystems, and other infrastructure, so permissions and restrictions matter.
For and against
For
- Free under the Apache License 2.0
- Visual pipeline design with row previews
- Runs on multiple execution environments
- Includes over 250 transforms and 80 actions
- Supports environment switching and separated credentials
Against
- Release 2.19.0 requires Java 21
- Hop Web is work in progress and provided as-is
- Operations can alter or delete connected data
- Community support has no promised response times
The verdict
Apache Hop combines visual pipeline and workflow design with several execution choices and a broad set of integrations. Its free availability is useful, but Java requirements, operational cautions, and the work-in-progress status of Hop Web are worth considering.
Who it suits
It suits teams building and running data integration pipelines across varied environments. Users should be prepared to manage permissions carefully because operations can affect connected data infrastructure.
