Amazon ElastiCache
What it is
Amazon ElastiCache is a managed caching service compatible with Valkey, Memcached, and Redis OSS. Customers can deploy it as a serverless cache or a node-based cluster. ElastiCache Serverless monitors compute, memory, and network use, then scales vertically and horizontally as demand changes. It replicates data across multiple Availability Zones and offers a 99.99% availability SLA for each cache. Listed uses include application data caching, semantic caching, data stores, session stores, and leaderboards. The service can act as a front-end cache for Amazon RDS, Aurora, DocumentDB, and DynamoDB, and can improve performance with EC2 and EMR. Security options include encryption in transit and at rest, IAM authentication, Valkey or Redis OSS AUTH, and role-based access control. CloudWatch provides more than 40 operational metrics at no additional charge. Valkey serverless pricing starts at $6 per month, with billing based on data stored in GB-hours and requests measured in ECPUs. Data tiering is not available with ElastiCache Serverless.

The review
Amazon ElastiCache is a managed in-memory caching service for applications that need consistently fast access to frequently used data. It suits AWS teams already running databases and compute in the cloud, particularly those that want either elastic capacity or control over provisioned nodes. Its strongest case is a secure, highly available cache integrated with the AWS stack; its main drawbacks are usage-based billing and the serverless tier’s lack of data tiering.
Overview
ElastiCache supports Valkey, Memcached, and Redis OSS, targeting microsecond-latency performance without requiring customers to operate the caching software themselves. You can place it in front of Amazon RDS, Aurora, DocumentDB, or DynamoDB, and use it to accelerate workloads on EC2 and EMR. AWS identifies application-data caching, semantic caching, data stores, session stores, and leaderboards as core use cases.
Deployment is available as a serverless cache or a node-based cluster. Serverless capacity adjusts to changing demand, while nodes offer a more explicitly provisioned architecture. For category comparisons, see Caching Software and In-Memory Databases.
Key features
Elastic serverless operation
ElastiCache Serverless watches compute, memory, and network consumption, scaling vertically and horizontally as workloads change. That is useful for applications with uneven traffic or teams that do not want to size and resize clusters manually. AWS says each serverless cache replicates data across multiple Availability Zones and carries a 99.99% availability SLA, a meaningful fit for production services where cache downtime affects response times.
Managed access and observability
Administrators can create a serverless cache through the AWS Management Console, SDK, or CLI. CloudWatch supplies more than 40 operational metrics at no additional charge, giving operators broad visibility into resource behavior without buying a separate monitoring product.
Security and integration
Encryption is available both in transit and at rest. Authentication options include IAM, Valkey or Redis OSS AUTH, and role-based access control. Resources can run inside an Amazon VPC, while AWS PrivateLink enables private access to ElastiCache API operations. These controls make it better suited to regulated or network-isolated environments than a cache exposed directly to the public internet. AWS lists SOC 1, SOC 2, SOC 3, ISO, MTCS, C5, PCI, HIPAA, and FedRAMP among its compliance programs.
Backups and compatibility
Automatic backups, persistent storage, TLS encryption, private networking, and compatibility with both Redis-family deployments and Memcached broaden its practical role. The important exception is serverless: data tiering is not available there. Provisioned Redis OSS users should also account for Extended Support, which adds an 80% premium in Years 1 and 2 and a 160% premium in Year 3; the amount varies by Region and calendar date.
Pricing
ElastiCache is a paid service, with pricing from $6/mo. The AWS Free Tier costs nothing. New AWS Free Tier signups can choose a Free Plan with $100 in credits and up to an additional $100 for activating foundational AWS services. Credits apply across participating AWS services, excluding AWS GovCloud (US) and China (Beijing) Regions. This is an introductory allowance rather than a permanently free cache.
ElastiCache Serverless costs $6 a month, billed for data stored in GB-hours and requests measured in ECPUs. Valkey pricing starts at $6/month, with no minimum fee or upfront commitment. Minimum metered storage is 100 MB for Valkey and 1 GB for Memcached and Redis OSS. It fits variable workloads, but request and storage consumption can make monthly bills less predictable, and serverless cannot use data tiering.
On-demand nodes use hourly billing from launch until termination; every partial node-hour is billed as a full hour. There is no long-term commitment, and price depends on node type and node count. This is the clearer choice when you need explicit capacity, but idle nodes continue to incur charges.
Database Savings Plans require a one-year commitment to a specified usage amount measured in $/hour. Pricing is custom, with eligible usage defined on the Database Savings Plans pricing page. It is aimed at organizations able to forecast sustained demand rather than short-lived or highly uncertain workloads.
Platforms
ElastiCache supports API, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows environments. Its AWS-native management and networking model is most compelling when the surrounding application already uses AWS services.
Who it's for
Choose ElastiCache for production AWS applications that need a managed cache beside RDS, Aurora, DocumentDB, DynamoDB, EC2, or EMR. Serverless is the better fit for fluctuating demand and teams prioritizing automatic scaling; node-based clusters suit buyers who need deliberate capacity planning. It is less attractive for a small, steady workload that cannot justify metered cloud operations, or when serverless data tiering is essential.
Pros and cons
- Pros: serverless scaling reduces capacity management; multi-AZ replication and a 99.99% SLA support resilient services; broad Valkey, Memcached, and Redis OSS compatibility; more than 40 CloudWatch metrics included; strong encryption, authentication, VPC, PrivateLink, and compliance coverage.
- Cons: serverless has no data tiering; usage-based ECPU and storage billing complicates forecasting; on-demand nodes bill each partial hour as a full hour; Redis OSS Extended Support can add substantial premiums.
Alternatives
RaimaDB is a paid database with a free trial and broad desktop, mobile, API, web, and self-hosted platform coverage, making it worth considering when you need a trial-based option beyond AWS caching.
eXtremeDB is a paid, trial-eligible commercial database for teams seeking licensing discussions across desktop, mobile, API, and self-hosted environments.
Aerospike Database offers a free Community Edition and a paid Enterprise Edition, suiting organizations that want a freemium path and self-hosted deployment choices.
SingleStore Helios provides a free shared workspace for evaluation and development, so it is a practical alternative for non-production testing before committing to paid capacity.
VMware Workstation Pro is free virtualization software for Windows and Linux hosts, not a like-for-like managed cache.
VoltDB has a free Developer Edition for individual developers and early exploration, useful when prototyping a database locally or in the cloud.
ALTIBASE offers a free A+ Edition for development, testing, and education, with limits including 128 concurrent users and a 10 GB in-memory database.
Apache Geode is free under the Apache License and suits teams that prefer binary or source distributions they can manage themselves.
Verdict
Amazon ElastiCache is a strong choice for AWS-centered teams that need a managed, secure cache with automatic scaling, resilient replication, and compatibility across three major caching technologies. Pick it when integration with AWS databases, CloudWatch, VPC networking, and compliance controls matters more than simple pricing. Look elsewhere if you require serverless data tiering, fully predictable fixed costs, or a free cache beyond introductory credits.
