VoltDB
Burlington, Massachusetts, United States
What it is
VoltDB is a distributed, in-memory database within Volt Active Data’s real-time decisioning layer, which combines data processing, streaming ingest, business logic, and AI integration. The database partitions data and stored procedures so queries can run in parallel while retaining ACID consistency. The company says Volt is built to move from ingest to action in under 10 milliseconds. Clusters can scale by adding nodes, with partitioning automated from the schema. Volt connects directly to Kafka or CDC streams and can expose decisions through SQL, REST, or Kafka topics. Deployment options include on-premises, cloud Kubernetes or VM-based, and hybrid environments. Production databases support Debian 12.11 or later, RHEL 8.8 or later, Rocky Linux 8.8 or later, and Ubuntu 20.04, 22.04, or 24.04; macOS 13 or later is supported for development. Enterprise Edition includes command logging, locally replicated partitions, and wide-area database replication. Authentication, role-based authorization, and TLS/SSL or Kerberos communications are available, but security is disabled by default. The free Developer Edition is not intended for production workloads, and production pricing is on request.
For and against
For
- Parallel queries with ACID consistency
- Clusters scale by adding nodes
- Connects to Kafka or CDC streams
- Supports on-premises, cloud, and hybrid deployment
- Enterprise Edition includes replication options
Against
- Production pricing is on request
- Developer Edition is not intended for production
- Security is disabled by default
- Production database support lists specific Linux versions
The verdict
VoltDB combines an in-memory database with stream connections and deployment choices for real-time decisioning. The free Developer Edition is for exploration, while production use calls for a pricing request and attention to security configuration.
Who it suits
VoltDB is aimed at companies building or modernizing mission-critical applications, including in financial services, telecommunications, and enterprise technology. Its free Developer Edition is for individual developers and early exploration, rather than production workloads.
