Apache Geode
What it is
Apache Geode is a data management platform for applications that need consistent, real-time access to data across distributed cloud systems. It uses replication, partitioning, and distributed processing to support low-latency, high-concurrency workloads. Data can reside in memory, with options for off-heap storage, compression, disk overflow, eviction, and expiration. Its write-ahead-log persistence is designed for parallel recovery of nodes or a full cluster. Geode supports distributed ACID transactions and OQL queries, including joins. Clients can subscribe to server-side data events, and servers can respond synchronously or asynchronously with ordered delivery. Clusters can replicate over a WAN using topologies such as active-active, active-passive, ring, hub-spoke, and star. Listed clients include Java, C++, and C# .NET Framework, alongside a REST API for other languages; documentation also describes a Spring Boot client. Geode is free and distributed as binaries and source under the Apache License. Authentication, authorization, role-based access control, and SSL are supported, but are not enabled by default.
For and against
For
- Supports distributed ACID transactions and OQL queries.
- Offers multiple WAN replication topologies.
- Includes Java, C++, and C# .NET clients.
- Free binary and source distributions are available.
Against
- Security controls are absent from the default installation.
- Hosted support relies on volunteers, a mailing list, and issue tracker.
The verdict
Apache Geode combines distributed data management, persistence, transactions, and event handling in a free platform. Teams should plan to configure security controls separately from the default installation.
Who it suits
It suits developers and enterprise teams building high-scale applications that need low latency and high availability. Teams can deploy it on physical or virtual machines using Unix or Windows instructions.
