To use split screen on a supported Samsung Galaxy, open Recents, tap the first app’s icon, choose Open in split screen view, then select a second supported app. Drag the divider to resize the apps. Samsung calls this feature Multi window; available options vary by device and software.
What Is Split Screen Mode?
Split screen, part of Samsung’s Multi window feature, lets you view and use two supported apps at once. The split-screen command may not appear for apps that do not support the feature.

How to Use Split Screen on Samsung Galaxy
On a Galaxy phone: Use Recents
- Open the first app.
- Open Recents using the Recent apps button or gesture.
- Tap the first app’s icon above its preview, then choose Open in split screen view.
- Select a second supported app from the available apps.
- Drag the divider between the apps to adjust their window sizes.
On a Galaxy tablet
- Tap Recents in the navigation bar.
- Tap the first app’s icon, then choose Open in split screen view.
- Choose a second app from Recents or the Apps screen.
- Drag the divider to resize the two apps.
- To close the split-screen view in this tablet workflow, tap Recents and close the view.
Alternative methods: Edge panel, taskbar, and App Pairs
On supported devices, you can open the Edge panel, choose All apps, and drag apps into split-screen positions. A tablet taskbar or other device-specific controls may also offer ways to open apps together. The available options and placement depend on the model and software.
On Z Fold devices, apps can be placed on the left, right, top, or bottom. On Z Fold front screens, Z Flip devices, and non-foldable phones, Samsung describes top-or-bottom placement. On supported devices, tap the divider and the App Pair star to save an app combination for quicker access. Saved locations and controls vary by device.

Use a Multi window gesture
Some current Galaxy models offer gesture controls. For example, Samsung’s Z Flip8 guide places these under Settings > Advanced features > Multi window, with options for Swipe for split screen and Swipe for pop-up view. Menu names and availability may differ on other models.
Compatibility and troubleshooting
- The split-screen option is missing: Some apps do not support Multi window, so the option may not appear.
- The instructions look different: Samsung notes that screens and settings can vary by device, carrier, and software version. Check the instructions for your specific model.
- Foldable cover-screen limits: Samsung’s general guidance says split screen and pop-up view are not supported on the front screen of Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip devices. Features on the main screen can differ.
