Wintertrace
Passau, Germany
What it is
Wintertrace is a tool for winter service operators to document completed operations with GPS tracks, weather data, and photos, then generate PDF service proofs. Drivers can use the free OwnTracks app on Android or iOS to send location data directly to a Wintertrace installation over HTTPS, without an intermediate cloud. Weather is fetched automatically at the start and end of an operation; Open-Meteo is the default provider, with Bright Sky and MET Norway also available. A client portal lets customers view their operations and weather, optionally see GPS tracks, and download earlier proofs. Configurable email notifications cover operation starts, ends, and exceptions, with delivery through plain SMTP and a notification log. Data tools include driver-data anonymisation, configurable retention periods, and CSV and PDF export. The free, open-source core is listed as free under GNU AGPLv3, with no artificial driver, customer, or operation caps; hosting capacity is the limit. Self-hosting requires PHP 8.4.1 or newer, MySQL 5.7+ or MariaDB 10.3+, a cron job every minute, and disk space for the system and photos. Wintertrace documents work rather than managing orders, optimizing routes, or functioning as an ERP.
For and against
For
- Creates PDF proofs from operation records.
- Weather is fetched at operation start and end.
- Client portal supports proof downloads.
- No artificial driver, customer, or operation caps.
Against
- Self-hosting requires specific server software.
- A cron job must run every minute.
- It does not provide route planning.
- Free self-hosted edition has no service level agreement.
The verdict
Wintertrace focuses on documenting winter service work, with client access, exports, and configurable data controls. Operators should account for its self-hosting requirements and the absence of order, routing, and ERP functions.
Who it suits
It suits winter service operators who need records of operations and customer-accessible proofs. It is less suited to teams seeking order management, route optimization, or ERP functions.
