VoxelShop
What it is
VoxelShop is a free, open-source application for creating, editing, optimizing, and generating voxel models on Linux, macOS, and Windows. Front, top, and left axis views accompany a 3D view for model work. Editing tools cover drawing, erasing, color picking, flood fill, selection, copy and paste, moving, cloning, rotation, and mirroring. Users can save reusable palettes and enter colors as RGB, CMYK, HSB, or hexadecimal values. Multiple layers may be hidden, renamed, reordered, merged, or used to restrict tool operations. The 3D view can fill cavities or remove interior voxels to reduce exported file sizes. Imports include PNG, JPG, JPEG, BMP, and numerous voxel formats, including BINVOX, KV6, KVX, QB, RAWVOX, and VOX variants. Exports include multiple formats, documented MagicaVoxel and Collada options, and bitmap slices. Shortcuts are freely bindable. Animation support is still in development. The VoxelShop plan costs nothing.
For and against
For
- Provides several axis and 3D views
- Includes extensive voxel editing tools
- Supports reusable color palettes
- Offers cavity and interior cleanup
- Exports model slices as bitmaps
Against
- Animation support is still in development
- Version 1.8.0 cannot import VSD into existing scenes
- Latest listed release is a pre-release
The verdict
VoxelShop offers a broad free toolkit for voxel construction, editing, cleanup, and export. Users needing finished animation support or VSD scene imports should account for its documented limitations.
Who it suits
VoxelShop suits voxel artists and developers who need layered model editing, palette control, optimization, and format conversion. It is available across Linux, macOS, and Windows.
