Vengi VoxEdit

What it is

Vengi VoxEdit is a free, open-source voxel volume editor for creating and editing voxel scenes. It supports Windows, macOS, Linux, and the web, and lists OpenGL 4.3 as a requirement. Editing tools include shape, stamp, line, extrude, sculpt, texture, paint, and transform brushes. Animation features include layers, keyframes, automatic keyframing, and IK constraints. The editor can load and save many voxel formats; vengi is its best-supported format. It can also import meshes for voxelization and export models or scenes to meshes and other formats. A Lua scripting API is available through a built-in editor and community script browser. Network mode supports real-time collaborative editing and chat. VoxEdit integrates with voxbox.store for browsing and exchanging models, which requires a VoxBox account. An MCP server can let LLMs control the editor through its network interface, provided VoxEdit and the server are running. The voxel editor is under development, and the project directs users to Discord for support, feature requests, and bug reports.

For and against

For

  • Free and open source
  • Supports animation layers, keyframes, and IK constraints
  • Includes Lua scripting tools
  • Network mode supports editing and chat
  • Runs on desktop platforms and the web

Against

  • The editor is under development
  • OpenGL 4.3 is required
  • Other formats may lose scene details
  • Animations save only in supported formats

The verdict

VoxEdit brings voxel editing, animation, scripting, and collaboration into one editor. Its under-development status and format-dependent export limits are worth considering before relying on it for finished scenes.

Who it suits

VoxEdit suits voxel artists who need scene editing, animation, scripting, or collaborative work. It may also suit developers who want to import meshes, export to other formats, or connect an MCP server.
