UPBGE
What it is
UPBGE is a free, open-source 3D game engine forked from the old Blender Game Engine and deployed with Blender. It supports real-time interactive projects such as games, architectural presentations, robotics prototypes, and physics simulations. Development stays inside Blender, letting users move between modeling and game functions without importing or exporting assets. Logic Nodes provide visual programming with more than 300 nodes, while Python scripting and custom GLSL shaders extend projects. Rendering uses Blender’s EEVEE engine; Bullet handles physics, and Audaspace and OpenAL provide audio functions. Projects can run in Blender’s viewport or as standalone executables, with runtime exports for Linux, macOS, and Windows. The manual includes tutorials and examples, and contributors can use Discord for help. UPBGE does not support every Blender feature: Curves and Speakers are not rendered in-game. It can partially load BGE games, but UPBGE-made games may not execute correctly in BGE.
For and against
For
- Free and open-source Blender-integrated engine
- Logic Nodes offer more than 300 visual nodes
- Python and GLSL support extend projects
- Exports runtimes for Linux, macOS, and Windows
- Supports games, simulations, and architectural presentations
Against
- Some Blender object types are not rendered in-game
- BGE game compatibility is only partial
- UPBGE games may not run correctly in BGE
The verdict
UPBGE brings game and simulation functions into Blender, with visual logic, scripting, and several export targets. Its Blender compatibility has defined limits, especially for unsupported object types and older BGE projects.
Who it suits
UPBGE suits creators building real-time 2D or 3D projects who already use Blender or want an integrated modeling and game workflow. It also fits simulation and visualization work.
