TerminusDB
What it is
TerminusDB is a free, open-source document graph database that stores JSON documents in a schema-enforced graph with Git-like data versioning. Its version controls support branching, diffing, merging, cloning, synchronization, and time-travel operations. Commits are ACID transactions, and every write undergoes schema validation. Developers can use an HTTP document API, GraphQL, or WOQL, a Datalog-based query language. GraphQL works with Apollo, urql, Relay, and other clients; official libraries cover TypeScript/JavaScript and Python, with Rust documented. Role-based access control uses users, roles, capabilities, and resource scopes. Deployment documentation covers Docker, Linux or macOS source builds, and Kubernetes, while DFRNT provides cloud instances. TerminusDB supports ontology modeling, semantic reasoning, graph visualization, and imports CSV, JSON, JSON-LD, RDF/XML, and Turtle. It does not support RDF/SPARQL. DFRNT assumed stewardship in 2025.
For and against
For
- Git-like branching and data history
- ACID commits with schema validation
- HTTP, GraphQL, and WOQL interfaces
- Role-based access control
- Runs with Docker or Kubernetes
Against
- No RDF/SPARQL support
- PostgreSQL suits relational analytics better
- Self-hosting requires deployment work
The verdict
TerminusDB combines graph modeling, strict schemas, transactions, and version control for evolving data. Teams needing RDF/SPARQL or relational analytics may need another fit.
Who it suits
It suits developers and data engineers handling auditable lineage, complex domain models, collaborative workflows, or changing structured content.
