What it is
SpineBones is a free 2D skeletal animation editor for building rigs, keying motion, and exporting animation assets. Its rigging tools include bone hierarchies, re-parenting, grouping, and inverse kinematics. In SETUP mode, users establish a base pose; ANIMATE mode holds keyframes for position, rotation, and scale. Timeline tools cover keyframe editing and looping, easing per key, and audio tracks. Slots can use PNG, JPG, SVG, or WebP artwork, including multiple attachments and frame-by-frame swaps. Users can also deform attachment meshes with keyed vertices and view neighboring poses with onion skin. Exports include WebM video, transparent PNG sequences, and sprite sheets with atlas data for game engines and 2D frameworks. Projects can be saved as portable .sbn packages, and older .json files can be opened. An MCP bridge works with Claude and other MCP clients for rig and keyframe creation, frame-rate changes, and exports. The Free plan is free, with a 300-frame timeline and playback up to 120 FPS. It runs on macOS 12 or newer and Windows 10 or newer.
