Quartz Scheduler
What it is
Quartz Scheduler is a free, open-source library for Java applications that run tasks at future times or recurring intervals. Triggers can use specific times or days, calendar exclusions, repeat counts, end dates, and intervals. Quartz states that it can schedule from tens to tens of thousands of jobs and supports JTA transactions and clustering. It can run embedded in an application, inside an application server or servlet container, as a standalone RMI program, or as a cluster of standalone programs. JDBCJobStore persists jobs and triggers in a relational database, while RAMJobStore keeps them in memory and loses them between executions. Built-in clustering depends on JDBCJobStore persistence. Data sources may be JDBC, application-server JNDI, or custom ConnectionProvider implementations. Downloads list Quartz 2.5.1 for Java 11 or newer with the jakarta namespace and Quartz 2.4.1 for Java 8 with javax.*. Quartz is self-hosted under Apache License 2.0. The project describes it as a scheduling library rather than a job queue, though small-scale queue use is possible.
For and against
For
- Schedules recurring and date-based triggers
- Supports clustering and JTA transactions
- Offers database or in-memory job storage
- Runs embedded or as standalone programs
- Apache License 2.0 open source
Against
- Self-hosted library rather than hosted service
- RAMJobStore does not persist between executions
- Clustering requires JDBCJobStore persistence
- Not intended as a full job queue
The verdict
Quartz Scheduler provides flexible scheduling modes, storage choices, and deployment arrangements for Java applications. Its self-hosted design and distinction from a job queue are central to evaluating it.
Who it suits
It suits Java application developers who need embedded or self-hosted scheduling for one-time or recurring tasks. Teams needing clustering should plan for database-backed JDBCJobStore persistence.
