Google Cloud Batch
Mountain View, California
What it is
Google Cloud Batch is a managed service for scheduling, queuing, and running batch jobs on Google infrastructure. It obtains resources, queues work, and creates or removes resources during runtime to meet job specifications. Jobs can run executable scripts or containerized workloads, with tasks set to run sequentially or in parallel. Batch dynamically provisions and autoscales compute resources for parallel work without manual intervention.
Jobs can use persistent disks, local SSDs, Cloud Storage buckets, and network file systems such as Filestore. Google Cloud identifies Cloud Storage, Pub/Sub, Cloud Logging, and Workflows as services for an end-to-end developer experience. Job and task state changes can be sent through Pub/Sub and streamed to BigQuery for analysis. Batch supports IAM permissions and VPC Service Controls; its documentation describes using Secret Manager for sensitive job data. Each job can have only one task group, named group0, and quotas limit parallel tasks, VM counts, and runtime. Machine types are limited to documented series. Finished jobs are deleted after 60 days unless removed earlier, so job information can be exported before then. Batch itself has no additional charge, but the Google Cloud resources used by jobs are billable.
For and against
For
- Automatically provisions resources to match job specifications.
- Supports parallel and sequential task execution.
- Can send state notifications through Pub/Sub.
- Supports IAM permissions and VPC Service Controls.
- Batch service has no additional charge.
Against
- Underlying Google Cloud resources are billable.
- Each job is limited to one task group.
- Quotas limit tasks, VM counts, and runtime.
- Finished jobs are deleted after 60 days.
The verdict
Google Cloud Batch automates resource provisioning and job execution, with integrations for storage, notifications, logging, and workflows. Account for resource charges, quotas, machine-type limits, and the 60-day job retention period when planning workloads.
Who it suits
Google Cloud Batch suits teams that need to schedule and run script-based or containerized batch workloads on Google infrastructure. It is relevant to workloads that can use its documented machine types and job limits.
