Project Lodestone
What it is
Project Lodestone is a free, open-source toolset for editing and converting Minecraft worlds across Java, Bedrock, console, and other editions. It has desktop and web interfaces, while libLodestone provides file reading, writing, and conversion for many editions and versions. Documentation lists Java, Bedrock, Raspberry Pi, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and 4, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, 3DS, Switch, and Classic Javascript Remake. Planned save editing covers player, region, chunk, and level data. Planned conversion spans editions and versions, with depth fixing and lighting recalculation options. The format editor roadmap names NBT, S-NBT, MCR/MCA, MCS, ARC, LOC, PCK, FUI, CDB, and VDB; supported world formats also include GRF and COL. Other planned tools include biome, entity, block entity, hex, LevelDB, datapack, and map item editors. The project remains in development: some converter versions are unavailable in the app, and many listed versions are expected support rather than completed work. It is not an official Microsoft, Minecraft, or Mojang Studios product.
For and against
For
- Free and open-source
- Desktop and web interfaces
- Broad documented edition coverage
- Many world formats are listed
- Community participation through Discord and pull requests
Against
- Project is still in development
- Some converter versions are unavailable
- Many supported versions are only expected support
- Not an official Minecraft product
The verdict
Project Lodestone presents an extensive open-source scope for Minecraft world editing and conversion. Its unfinished roadmap and incomplete converter availability make current capabilities less certain than the documented plans.
Who it suits
It suits Minecraft users and contributors interested in cross-edition world files, conversion, or planned editing tools. Users should be comfortable with an in-development project and its community Discord.
