Private.Ki Mail
What it is
Private.Ki Mail provides end-to-end encrypted email between Private.Ki users on web, iOS, and Android. Message bodies, subjects, and attachments are encrypted on the sender’s device before transmission and decrypted on the recipient’s device; each message displays encryption and signature checks. Mail to an outside provider is end-to-end encrypted when the recipient has a PGP key. Otherwise, it is delivered normally and marked as not end-to-end encrypted. The Free plan is free and includes one @private.ki address, web access, and attachments up to 25 MB per file, encrypted on the device before upload. Mail features include undo send with 5-, 10-, 20-, or 30-second windows, multiple signatures, search, and Inbox, Sent, Drafts, Archive, and Trash folders. Users can export their public key or import another person’s; PGP-compatible programs can encrypt mail to the service’s published public key. Security options include TOTP two-factor authentication and QR device pairing. The maker says its servers store ciphertext and delivery metadata, but no access or connection logs. It cannot recover a lost passphrase or protected key, and says there is no independent audit yet. Plus is planned at $5 a month, billed annually, and is not yet on sale.
For and against
For
- Encrypts messages on the sender’s device
- Shows encryption and signature checks per message
- Includes TOTP two-factor authentication
- Supports public key export and import
Against
- Free attachments are limited to 25 MB per file
- Lost passphrases and protected keys cannot be recovered
- No independent audit yet
- Plus is planned, not yet on sale
The verdict
Private.Ki Mail offers device-side encryption between its users and labels external mail that lacks end-to-end encryption. Consider the recovery limitation and audit status, as well as the attachment cap on Free.
Who it suits
Private.Ki Mail suits people seeking encrypted communication with other Private.Ki users across web and mobile. Users who need mail to outside providers should check whether recipients have PGP keys for end-to-end encryption.
