OpenLogReplicator
What it is
OpenLogReplicator is a free, open-source, self-hosted change-data-capture solution for Oracle databases. Written in C++, it reads transactions directly from Oracle binary redo logs and streams changes as JSON or Protobuf. Targets include Kafka, flat files, plain TCP/IP or ZeroMQ network streams, and a discard output for testing. The log-based design aims to minimize impact on the source database. It can process archived redo logs and run offline while the database is shut down, while also tracking actual DDL commands. Basic DML filters can limit processing, such as selecting only INSERT operations for a table. Direct Prometheus metrics include DML counters that can carry schema-name tags. Debezium can use it instead of the LogMiner reader; version 1.3.0 is the minimum listed, with 1.9.0 recommended for Debezium 2.x and 3.x. Oracle 23c is supported, while binary XMLType support for Oracle 11.2 through 21c is experimental. If an expected redo record cannot be decoded, processing stops by default, though invalid records can be skipped. The GPL v3 plan costs nothing.
For and against
For
- Reads Oracle redo logs directly
- Supports Kafka, files, TCP/IP, and ZeroMQ
- Can operate offline with archived logs
- Tracks actual DDL commands
- Provides Prometheus metrics
Against
- Self-hosted Linux deployment required
- Binary XMLType support is experimental for older Oracle versions
- Processing stops on undecodable records by default
- Support guidance warns against sharing personal-data redo logs
The verdict
OpenLogReplicator provides a free, log-based Oracle CDC path with multiple outputs and Debezium compatibility. Plan for Linux self-hosting and its strict handling of undecodable records and sensitive redo-log data.
Who it suits
It suits teams self-hosting Oracle CDC on Linux and routing changes to streaming, file, or network targets. It is also relevant to Debezium users and deployments needing offline redo-log processing.
