PeerDB
What it is
PeerDB streams data from Postgres to data warehouses, queues, and storage engines using one-way replication. It supports log-based change data capture, cursor-based replication using timestamps or integers, and XMIN-based replication, along with a Postgres-compatible SQL interface for ETL and data movement. Supported Postgres features include jsonb, arrays, PostGIS, TOAST columns, and schema changes. The actively maintained source connectors are PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, CockroachDB, and BigQuery; actively maintained destinations are ClickHouse, ClickHouse Cloud, and Postgres. Several other destinations, including Snowflake, BigQuery, Elasticsearch, Kafka, and S3, are deprecated and no longer actively maintained. PeerDB is available under the AGPL-3.0 license for free use and deployment. The Open source plan includes a Docker setup, CDC, streaming query, and query-layer features. Micro costs $250 a month and is recommended for up to 50 million rows moved monthly. Larger plans specify higher vcore and row-volume recommendations, with 24x7 production support and SLAs on Small, Medium, and Large. PeerDB states SOC 2 Type II and GDPR compliance.
For and against
For
- Supports log-based, cursor-based, and XMIN replication
- Provides a Postgres-compatible SQL interface
- Open-source plan includes Docker setup
- States SOC 2 Type II and GDPR compliance
Against
- Actively maintained destinations are limited to ClickHouse and Postgres variants
- Several listed destinations are deprecated
- Micro costs $250 a month
The verdict
PeerDB offers multiple replication methods and a free self-deployment option, with currently maintained destinations focused on ClickHouse and Postgres. Check destination status before planning a data flow, since several connectors are deprecated.
Who it suits
PeerDB may suit teams moving Postgres data to its actively maintained destinations or seeking a self-deployed, AGPL-3.0 option. Paid plans include implementation support, and selected plans list 24x7 production support with SLAs.
