mintty
What it is
mintty is a free Windows terminal emulator for Cygwin, MSYS, MSYS2, related projects, and WSL. It provides xterm-compatible terminal emulation and DEC screen controls. Display support includes 256 colours, True Colour, Unicode, bidirectional text, emoji, Arabic shaping, image display, Sixel, ReGIS, and Tektronix 4014 graphics. Users get configurable shortcuts, Unicode composition, mouse modes, selection, copy and paste, drag and drop, and Ctrl-click links for files or URLs. Window features include virtual tabs, session switching, fullscreen, transparency, multiple monitors, and high DPI. Settings can be supplied as command-line options or stored in a text configuration file without registry entries. mintty is the default Cygwin terminal, installed by default in MSYS2, and included with Git for Windows as Git Bash. It can host WSL. The project provides source code, releases, snapshots, documentation, and issue-tracker support. It does not include PuTTY networking, and the site notes possible pseudo-terminal interworking problems with native Windows console input and output.
For and against
For
- Free Windows terminal emulator
- Broad Unicode and color support
- Virtual tabs and session switching
- Text-file configuration without registry entries
- Can host WSL
Against
- No SSH support
- No split panes
- Native console interworking can have problems
- Networking functionality is not included
The verdict
mintty is a feature-rich terminal front end for Windows Unix-like environments and WSL. Its lack of built-in networking and noted console compatibility caveat define its limits.
Who it suits
It suits Windows users running Cygwin, MSYS-family environments, Git Bash, or WSL who want configurable terminal emulation. Users needing PuTTY networking must use packages such as OpenSSH or inetutils instead.
