Alacritty
What it is
Alacritty is a free, cross-platform terminal emulator built around OpenGL acceleration and extensive configuration. It is intended for people who spend a lot of time working in a terminal and runs on Linux, macOS, Windows, and BSD. Vi mode provides keyboard navigation through the viewport and scrollback, text selection, and copying; users can also search scrollback in either direction. Configurable regex hints can recognize visible text or hyperlinks and pass them to an external application or trigger a built-in action. A single instance can open multiple terminal windows, including through a command. Rather than recreating other applications’ functions, Alacritty can integrate with them, and URL-opening applications can be configured. Settings go in a TOML file that the program does not create automatically. The project describes Alacritty as beta, with missing features and bugs still to address. It has no tabs, split panes, or graphical configuration editor. It requires OpenGL ES 2.0; on Windows, ConPTY support is required on Windows 10 version 1809 or later.
For and against
For
- Free software for Linux, macOS, Windows, and BSD.
- GPU acceleration and scripting API.
- Vi mode supports scrollback navigation and text selection.
- Regex hints can pass text or links to applications.
Against
- The project describes it as beta.
- No tabs, split panes, or graphical configuration editor.
- TOML configuration file is not created automatically.
- Windows requires ConPTY support on Windows 10 version 1809 or higher.
The verdict
Alacritty offers a free, configurable terminal with GPU acceleration, vi-mode controls, search, and multiple windows. Its beta status and lack of tabs and split panes are important limitations to weigh.
Who it suits
Alacritty suits people who spend substantial time in a terminal and want configurable keyboard navigation and scrollback search. Users who need tabs, split panes, or a graphical configuration editor should note those features are not included.
