MHDD
What it is
MHDD is a free utility for low-level hard drive diagnostics and management. It supports IDE, Serial ATA, and SCSI drives, and can access USB storage through USB-to-SCSI emulation drivers. Diagnostic tools scan drives, display SMART attributes, test drives, and log scan results. The utility can also perform low-level erases, read and write sectors, remap bad sectors, and change drive size with HPA. A simple scripting engine and batch-file support allow tests to run without an operator. The maker distributes MHDD as a CD image, self-extracting floppy image, or executable archive. The manual lists a Pentium or later, 4 megabytes of RAM, a keyboard, and DR-DOS or MS-DOS 6.22 or later as requirements. Some AHCI controllers may not be recognized; the manual suggests IDE or Legacy mode when needed. It also warns that MHDD can damage a drive or cause data loss, advising a backup before erase or remap operations. The manual says the tool is difficult for people without deep knowledge of disk drives.
