Kubean
What it is
Kubean is an open-source toolchain for managing Kubernetes cluster lifecycles through a declarative API. Running on an existing Kubernetes cluster and using Kubespray underneath, it handles installation, uninstallation, upgrades, and scaling through custom resources and Kubernetes resources. The documented installation method is a Helm chart, and the control node or cloud terminal needs Helm plus an existing standard or cloud-provider Kubernetes cluster. Kubean can deploy clusters over SSH, with an SSH private key stored in a Kubernetes Secret referenced by a Cluster resource. Operations may run a playbook or shell command, with optional hooks before and after. The project supports bare metal, virtual machines, and cloud environments with customer-managed control planes. Offline releases include operating-system packages, images, and binaries. Listed delivery architectures include AMD, ARM, and Kunpeng with Kylin. Offline package documentation covers CentOS, Red Hat, Kylin, and Ubuntu; local ISO and extra software sources are currently limited to CentOS. Kubean describes itself as a CNCF sandbox project.
For and against
For
- Declarative installation, upgrades, scaling, and removal
- Runs playbooks or shell commands with hooks
- Supports offline packages, images, and binaries
- Delivers for AMD, ARM, and Kunpeng with Kylin
- Helm installation on an existing Kubernetes cluster
Against
- Requires an existing Kubernetes cluster and Helm
- Offline ISO sources currently support only CentOS
- UnionTech V20 packages require manual building
- Runs on Kubernetes rather than standalone
The verdict
Kubean provides a Kubernetes-native way to coordinate cluster provisioning and lifecycle work, including offline and multi-architecture scenarios. Its prerequisite of an existing cluster and Helm makes it better suited to established Kubernetes environments.
Who it suits
Kubean suits operators managing customer-controlled Kubernetes clusters across bare metal, virtual machines, or cloud environments. It is also relevant when declarative operations, SSH deployment, or offline packages are required.
