Jamulus

What it is

Jamulus is free, open-source software for playing, rehearsing, and jamming remotely in real time over a broadband connection. The site describes use by choirs, bands, folk and classical musicians, music lessons, schools, and universities. Its client mixer lets you adjust how each connected musician sounds, with controls to mute, solo, pan, and group channels. People connected to the same server can exchange text messages visible to everyone there, and a connected MIDI controller can operate mixer controls, subject to platform and version availability. You can run your own server, though clients can also use listed or unlisted servers. Audio quality depends on network conditions; the manual says fewer than five players is usually fine on a slower home connection. Communications are sent without encryption, and normal use shares your Jamulus name, city, country, instrument, and skill level with connected servers, peers, and protocol-using third parties. When recording is enabled, unmodified servers show a notice, and the server operator controls recordings. Jamulus is available for Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows, as well as API and self-hosted use.

The verdict

Jamulus offers remote real-time music sessions with mixer controls and optional server hosting. Its unencrypted communications and network-dependent audio quality are important considerations.
